Rampart compiling a 10-0-4 record amid injuries and fielding a third-string keeper deserves its own Netflix documentary.

The boys soccer squad began the season hot, scoring 11 goals in its first two contests and earned a 2-0 record. However, in the home matchup against Lewis-Palmer, the Rams lost a weapon in Wyatt Brizic.

The senior exited the contest late in the second half with a broken collar bone after a slide tackle gone wrong, resulting in 12 missed games.

Since their second match, the Rams’ high-octane attack has lost some of its oomph. Rampart only has scored more than three goals in a contest on two occasions — a 7-0 win against Vista Ridge and a 6-0 victory at Palmer Ridge.

“I don’t want to hang my hat on one person, but we have been lacking in goal scoring,” Rams coach Karl Anderson said. “I really don’t think we’ve played our best game yet. We’ve had spurts of brilliance, but we haven’t played a full 80 minutes of soccer yet.”

Anderson noted this especially rings true in the ties. Save the 0-0 tie against Pine Creek on Sept. 26 and a rally in a 1-1 tie Oct. 5 against Doherty, the Rams led in half of their draws.

Though Anderson said it’s frustrating to leave those games with ties, he recognizes the silver lining. No team has outscored the Rams in a contest and in 13 of their 14 matches, opponents have two or fewer goals.

The Rams accomplished this despite having a striker fill in at keeper.

Tegan Derickson played goalie after the Rams’ usual keeper, Rowen Oregel missed a contest for family reasons.

Anderson said the Rams had a backup goalkeeper, but he had “prior arrangements to be out of town.” So Derickson decided to step in the net against Denver South.

Derickson's play against Denver South – nine saves and no goals allowed – earned him the spot at keeper, where the senior has played ever since.

“My thinking was whatever happens happens. If I perform well out there, great. If not, it’s not the end of the world,” Derickson said. “I wanted to go out there and do the best I could. I trust my teammates to set me up in the goal to where I don’t have to face a bunch of difficult shots and I trust the offense to put some goals in the back of the net.”

In 14 games, Derickson has allowed seven goals and saved 56 shots for the Rams. Not too shabby considering the Rams senior never played goalkeeper until this season.

“I’ve played soccer for 17 years and I’ve played everywhere but goalie,” Derickson said. “We were talented and deep enough as a team for me to play goalie and adapt to that change where we could still perform at a high level. I’m willing to give everything I got for the team to succeed especially in a pressure position.”

As of Monday afternoon, the Rams hold the No.3 slot in CHSAA’s RPI poll. The top 16 teams host playoff contest.

“We still haven’t played our best soccer of the season and hopefully that’s still to come,” Anderson said. “Our defense has stepped up. Nick Whorton stepped up big as a center back. Tegan Derickson stepped up big as a goalkeeper and has kept us in a lot of contests. They’ve helped instill that confidence in our team. I give them credit for keeping that going.”
