Doherty goalkeeper Taylor Leiker blocks a shot as Rampart forward MacKenzie McCorkle races toward the goal during the first half Wednesday at Doherty High School in Colorado Springs. The Rams beat the Spartans 2-0.

Rampart girls' soccer paid it forward.

Six days removed from their first loss of the season against rival Pine Creek, the Rams dominated previously undefeated Doherty at the Spartans' house Wednesday evening.

The 2-0 final score doesn't reflect Rampart's handling of the Spartans in possession, turnovers and chances created, and largely stands as a testament to a stellar outing from Doherty's sophomore keeper Taylor Leiker who recorded 25 saves on the evening.

But the victory still sends a message, according to Rampart sophomore Emma Naftanel.

"I think that the loss really motivated us because I think it put some fire under us and we just wanted to come out again and show that we are still working toward playoffs," she said.

Naftanel scored the game-deciding goal just over 10 minutes in. Following an unfortunate sequence for the Rams which saw a shot bounce off one post, roll along the goal line and bounce off the other without going in, Naftanel gave her team the lead on the ensuing possession on a strike from inside the Doherty penalty area.

The sophomore's goal would stand as the only score of the match until classmate -- and Rams' leading scorer --Brooklynn Pollmiller netted her eighth goal of the year as insurance for Rampart in the waning moments of the match.

Entering the contest, host Doherty had conceded just one goal through seven games. Leiker demonstrated why. Facing a Rampart press that battered the Doherty back line with shots, Leiker repeatedly thwarted the Rams attack and kept her team in the game.

No save was bigger than the one she made in the 34th minute against Naftanel who had broken free for a chance from point-blank range.

Despite the keeper's heroics, Rampart stayed poised in its attack.

"It's unlike us to not be able to put a couple more goals in the back of the net but (Leiker) played outstanding to save as many as she did," Rampart coach Carisa Whitson said. " (Rampart is) relentless. The score isn't good enough for us and so we're going to continue to work on that final third."

Doherty struggled to find opportunities offensively in the first half. The Spartans' alignment in the opening 40 minutes was designed to withstand the Rams onslaught to a degree and capitalize in transition on mistakes from the visitors. Unfortunately for the Spartans, the Rams were meticulous in their distribution.

"I think we've been working on moving off the ball and just playing on the ground through balls," Naftanel said of her team's attacking success.

The Spartans shifted alignment and personnel to begin the second half, notably moving junior leading scorer Nahlaya Burns from the back line to a striking position.

Burns and Doherty countered the Rams' press for a portion of the second half and began to move the ball into the attacking third regularly but never found an equalizer.

As the match went on, the visitors regained control en route to their first 5A Colorado Springs Metro League win this season.

Rampart improved to 8-1 on the year. Doherty fell to 7-1.
