No. 7 Fountain-Fort Carson won its regional on Saturday to earn a berth in the 5A state boys volleyball tournament.

The Trojans opened the day with a 3-0 win over No. 18 Valor Christian. In their second match they overcame a 1-1 score after two sets against Vista PEAK to win 3-1.

Fountain-Fort Carson (23-2) will make its first appearance at state in the sport that is in its third year as a sanctioned sport by the Colorado High School Activities Association.

The weekend didn’t go as well for the Pikes Peak region’s other three teams competing at regionals.

No. 1 Discovery Canyon, the two-time defending champion, went 1-1 in its home regional, giving the Thunder an earlier-than-anticipated ending to their season.

DCC breezed through its first match of the day, a 3-0 win over No. 24 Stargate School, but the Thunder lost 3-1 to No. 16 Douglas County. Prior to Saturday, the Thunder had lost just two matches in program history.

Sand Creek and Cheyenne Mountain, who traveled to regionals as lower-seeded teams, also bowed out.

The No. 14 Scorpions crushed Hinkley 3-0 in their first match but faltered 3-0 against Thornton in the final match of the regional. Sand Creek finishes the season 21-3.

Cheyenne Mountain, No. 15, dominated Regis Groff 3-0 to begin the day but fell victim to a sweep against No. 2 Mountain Vista. The Red-Tailed Hawks end the year 17-8.

The state tournament bracket will be released Monday.
