No. 4 Cheyenne Mountain

Game data: No. 7 Pueblo West (18-4) vs. No. 4 Cheyenne Mountain (17-7) ... Tuesday at Denver's All-Star Park ... Winner moves on to 4A championship game May 30. 

Scouting report: After Cheyenne Mountain was kicked into the losers bracket thanks to an 11-2 loss to No. 1 Windsor, the No. 4 Indians claimed a decisive 12-5 win over No. 6 Holy Family on Wednesday to move on for a chance at the state title next week.

Although Cheyenne Mountain's official stats on MaxPreps have not been updated through the playoffs, the Indians held a steady .350 team batting average through the regular season, led by Aaron Berkhoff with a .433 average and 26 RBIs. Berkhoff also led the Indians in the regular season with a .700 slugging percentage.

Sophomore Michael Ellis is the Indians' top man on the mound with six wins in the regular season. He has an impressive 2.15 ERA and fanned 25 through 39 innings pitched.

Pueblo West is the only remaining undefeated team in the 4A state tournament after eking by No. 1 Windsor 7-6 in the third round Wednesday. The Cyclones' three straight wins in the playoffs extends their winning streak to 14 games.

Pueblo West has a solid batting order with nine batters with 10 RBIs or more, including six with an impressive batting average of .444 or better.

Tyler Declusin leads the Cyclones with a .507 average and 33 RBIs.


No. 1 Peyton

Game data: No. 4 Hotchkiss (19-3) vs. No. 1 Peyton (21-1) ... Class 2A semifinals, 9 a.m. Saturday at Pueblo's Hobbs Field. Winner moves on to play either No. 3 Paonia or No. 7 Dayspring Christian Academy in the state championship at noon.

Scouting report: Peyton has won 17 straight heading into the Class 2A semifinals, and the Panthers have shown no signs of slowing down. Since the end of the regular season Peyton has outscored opponents 35-17, including a 12-7 win over District 2 rival Evangelical Christian in the quarterfinals. 

Led by Jaeden Meyers, who bats .547 with 23 RBIs, the Panthers bat a combined .396. Meyers, who also leads the team in slugging, has struck out just six times in 92 plate appearances.

Freshman Brandon Hussey is ranked second on the team with a .446 batting average and 21 RBIs. Hussey leads the team in stolen bases with eight.

The Peyton bullpen is also stacked with talent with four pitchers with at least three wins and a combined ERA of 1.86.

Hotchkiss averages .351 led by Presley Pene with a .436 average and 20 RBIs. With seven batters with 14 or more RBIs this season and averaging at least .358, the Bulldogs are also stacked at the plate.

Senior Jonathan Gonzalez is Hotchkiss' top pitcher with a 1.59 ERA and a 6-1 record this season. Pene and Eli Kirk are undefeated; Pene with six wins and Kirk with five.
