Record: 5-2

So far: Although early in the season, Rampart has proven to stay calm when the game is on the line. The Rams have come out on the winning side of three close battles separated by three points or less, including an overtime win against Denver South. Their biggest win, however, came in the second game of the season when Rampart eked out a three-point victory over Liberty, which is ranked seventh in Class 5A and in the top 15 in the state.

Stat leaders: The Rams are led by a trio of seniors who average well into double figures. Xavier Johnson leads the team with 18.9 points per game, followed by Josh Kavalec with 17.7. Kavalec leads the team with 3.3 steals and four assists per game. Rampart’s big man Dawson Carper averages 14.6 points and eight rebounds.  

Matchup: The Rams will open the Holiday Tournament against Fruita Monument on Thursday at 8 p.m. The Wildcats are 8-3 and are fresh off a tournament win at the Greeley Invitational. Their top scorer is Trey Morrill who averages 14.8 points.


Record: 4-1

So far: The Lions have started out strong, rebounding from a season-opening loss with four straight wins heading into the holiday break. However, aside from its first loss, CSCS has yet to play a team with a winning record. The Lions’ only loss was to Grand Valley, which is undefeated. CSCS will face much tougher opponents in the upcoming tournament and will have a chance to prove itself.

Stat leaders: The Lions are led by junior Kolby Walker who averages 18 points, followed by Noah Hopkins (16.4 ppg) and Brandon Pitt (11.4 ppg). CSCS is ranked No. 8 in the state for steals per game, averaging 17.2 as a team, led by Walker with 3.4 per game.

Matchup: CSCS faces Pueblo West (6-2) in the opening round of the tournament on Thursday at 5 p.m. The Cyclones are riding a three-game winning streak heading into the tournament. Pueblo West has just one scorer who averages in the double figures, Nieyeme Smeyer-Williams (16.6), but two more are flirting with a double-figure average. Jacob Wilkenson and Pierre Taylor average 9.8 and 9.6 points, respectively.  


Record: 3-3

So far: Rampart kicked off a three-game winning streak in the seventh-place game of the Mountain Vista/Rock Canyon tournament with a decisive win over Monarch, and cruised to a big 12-point win over Vista Ridge (5-3).

Stat leaders: Madi Wriedt leads the Rams with 14.8 points per game, and is flirting with a double-double average with 7.8 rebounds per game. Bailee Hart puts up 11.5 points on average, and 7.2 rebounds per game. Senior Shannon Danda leads the team with 1.5 blocks per game as the Rams average 4.8 per contest.  

Matchup: Rampart opens the tournament against Fruita Monument at 6:30 on Thursday. It will be a tough matchup for the Rams as the Wildcats enter the new year at 8-1 with an immensely strong schedule before the holiday break. Riley Snyder leads Fruita Monument with 18.6 points per game followed by Angelique Gall with 12 per game. The pair also leads the team in rebounds with 5.7 and 5.5 rebounds per game, respectively.


Record: 5-0

So far: The Lions have not met a challenge they couldn’t handle yet this season. They’ve limited opponents limited opponents to fewer than 35 points so far this season, and allow fewer than 25 points on average. While the Lions' defense is top-notch, CSCS also leads the state in scoring, averaging 66 points.

Stat leaders: Megan Engesser leads the Lions with 24.4 points per game (ranked third in the state) and is on the cusp of a double-double average with 8.4 rebounds per game. Junior Rachel Ingram is second on the team in scoring with 15.8 points per game. The Lions also average nearly 20 steals per game, led by Ingram who has 29 so far this season.

Matchup: CSCS kicks off the tournament against undefeated Pueblo West on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. The Cyclones (8-0) have had similar success to CSCS so far this season, averaging 60 points. Individual player stats for Pueblo West are not available on MaxPreps, however, Olivia Lough, who averaged 17.3 points last season, and Hannah Simental (10.4 ppg in 2016-17) have returned to the Cyclones roster.
