Here are 10 events to keep close watch on for this week's upcoming state track and field meet.
Five events to watch at girls’ state track and field meetClass 5A high jump
Eight athletes are separated by one inch in this event. The top five seeds have all cleared 5-5, while the next three – including Coronado’s Celia Smith – are at 5-4.
Class 4A 100 meters
Cheyenne Mountain’s Michaela Moore leads the way after her 12.27. Lauren Gale (Discovery Canyon), Kiersten Allen (Green Mountain) and Mary Gillett (Niwot) all follow at 12.38. Just behind them is Air Academy’s Olivia Whitaker (12.42).
Class 4A 1,600 meters
Mountain View’s Lauren Offerman is the class of the event, posting a top time this season of 4:57.79. But after her is a pack of six runners separated by less than eight seconds. Air Academy’s Maria Mettler is seeded second (5.04.28) and teammate Tatum Miller is fifth (5:10.58). Pine Creek’s Devon Kroeker is seventh (5:11.68).
Class 3A 100 meters
Maya Evans of Lutheran is the pace setter at 12.0 seconds. She’s got a number of runners chasing her, including TCA’s Claudia Valenzuela (third, 12.59) and Sierra’s Briyana Bunson (fourth, 12.73).
Class 2A 400-meter relay
Calhan is seeded first in 51.25. But the next four teams are all less than a second behind, including Meeker in second at 51.34.
Five events to watch at boys’ state track and field meet
Class 5A 110-meter hurdles
Rampart’s Xavier Bishop-Falu is the top seed at 14.48. But there’s not a lot of wiggle room. Only .22 seconds separate first and sixth. Fountain-Fort Carson’s Jequan Hogan is second at 14.50 and Liberty’s Andrew Doctor is sixth at 14.70.
Class 5A high jump
Fountain-Fort Carson’s Jequan Hogan is the top jumper at 6-9. But right behind him are three from the Pikes Peak region. Rampart’s Josh Kavalec is second (6-7), Palmer’s Tanner Walsh is third (6-6) and Coronado’s Jaydon Lewis is fourth (6-5).
Class 4A 400 meters
Six of the top eight contenders are from the Pikes Peak region, led by Air Academy’s Nik Chappee (47.67). Harrison’s Tyrese Van Horne (second, 48.01) and Devon Washington (fourth, 48.82), Vista Ridge’s Isaiah Lapioli (sixth, 49.20) and Anthony Bellot (seventh, 49.30), and Widefield’s Jaquaireus Grant (eighth, 49.81) will be trying to track down Chappee.
Class 4A shot put
Silver Creek’s Brock Knechtel is the top seed with a toss of 52-10¾. Right behind him is Nathaniel Miller of Widefield (52-10) and Vista Ridge’s Jalen Sami (52-9).
Class 3A 100 meters
Nine runners are separated by .29 seconds, including Sierra’s Dante Thomas (seeded fourth, 10.90), Manitou Springs’ Jayden Omi (fifth, 10.99) and TCA’s Brayden Luft (tied eighth, 11.08). D’Evelyn’s Wesley Tedstrom has the top time at 10.79.
