Fountain Valley boys' lacrosse triumphs over St. Mary's, captures second league game in six years

Fountain Valley School senior Connor Olson looks to set up the offense during a 17-3 win over St. Mary's in boys' lacrosse on Friday, April 20, 2018. He finished with a game-high five goals.

At this point, anything the Fountain Valley School boys' lacrosse team does is history-making.

In the season opener this month, the Danes topped Lutheran for their first league win in six years.

On Friday afternoon, they continued their historic run by cruising to a 17-3 home win over St. Mary's in Class 4A Southern League action. This came despite both teams having to endure cold temperatures, rain and biting wind as a storm moved across the Pikes Peak region.

FVS sophomore Duncan McLellan scored his first goal within the first few seconds, suggesting that the Danes didn't want to mess around in this weather. In fact, the players warmed up in sleeting rain.

"It was really crappy weather," McLellan said, "so we wanted to come out and play hard."

That approach worked out well for the Danes (2-3, 2-1), who jumped to 4-0 first quarter and 10-1 halftime leads. They continued to score in the second half, putting up seven more goals.

In other words, FVS never slowed down against St. Mary's (2-9, 0-3).

"We didn't want them to think they had a chance, not even the slightest," said Danes coach Curtis Singmaster.

Senior Connor Olson recorded five goals on nine shots, all in the final three quarters, while McLellan found the back of the net on each of his four shot attempts and sophomore Jackson Blaylock finished with a game-best four assists.

"We started moving the ball pretty well and opportunities started opening up," McLellan said. "We started making it to the cage and making nice cuts and catching passes in the right spot, and we were good from there."

Things appear to be changing within the FVS program, whose last winning season was in 2010. Prior to this year, the Danes last won a league game April 27, 2012, when they beat Pueblo West to finish 1-5 in league play.

But they shook off that slump early this season, as FVS came away with an 11-8 win over Lutheran on April 7.

The Danes believe they can continue this momentum, even in bad weather.

"I think the thing I was most excited about was the consistency the entire game," said Singmaster, "as opposed to showing up just for the first half."
