Turner takes wrestling nationally
Two-time state champion Sam Turner will compete at this weekend’s National Wrestling Coaches Association USA National Scholastic Duals.
Turner, the Discovery Canyon junior who won the Class 4A state title in February at 132 pounds, will join team Colorado at Wabash College in Indiana for the 20-team tournament.
Last year, Colorado finished fourth in the folkstyle dual tournament.
The tournament runs Friday-Saturday.
Turner also won a state title as a sophomore at 120 pounds.
Hwang repeat winner; Manitou takes team title
At Pueblo: Sarah Hwang did it again for St. Mary’s, but it was rival Manitou Springs that took team honors.
For the second time in a week, Hwang shot 83 to win a girls' golf tournament, this time a league tourney. Hwang was nine strokes better than Manitou’s Katy Burr, who finished second at the Tri-Peaks Girls’ Golf Round 1 on Tuesday.
Burr’s 92 led the Mustangs, who placed three golfers in the top eight to shoot 284, 16 strokes better than second-place Florence.
Hwang won the Lady Trojan Invitational with an 83 on April 1.
Grizzlies anglers hope to hook scholarship
Mesa Ridge is sending a pair of anglers to the national high school fishing championship, a non-CHSAA sanctioned sport.
Senior Josh Cundiff and 2014 graduate Bradley Czosnyka won the 2014 Western Conference Championship at Clear Lake, Calif., which qualified them for the national tournament, which will be April 24-25.
The tournament will be at Grand Lake O' the Cherokees in Oklahoma.
The top prize in the tournament is $10,000 in college scholarships.
