Coronado was supposed to be in rebuilding mode after losing running sensation Bailey Roth to graduation. The Cougars were supposed to hit a wall after jumping from Class 4A to 5A.
But Thursday at Air Academy High School the Cougars looked dominant as they easily won the Kadet Invitational.
In the boys’ Division-I race, Coronado had four runners finish in the top six and won the meet with a score of 29. Air Academy followed in with 55 and Palmer Ridge finished third (82) despite not running its fastest runner Eric Hamer.
“It’s tough to lose Bailey. He was so great for us and such a good teammate,” said Adam Egger, who won the meet with a time of 16 minutes, 42 seconds. “And because we lost him, and because of the move up to 5A, a lot of people think we are rebuilding. And maybe we are -- but we still have a lot of good runners on this team.”
On the girls’ side, Air Academy won the D-I race with a team score of 37 as Katie Rainsberger crossed first in 18:03, 50 seconds faster than the field. Green Mountain (77) and Ralston Valley (78) finished second and third, respectively.
There were 23 schools at the Kadet Invitation.
