Fountain Valley battles back before losing 2A state semifinal girls' soccer game


There’s no shortage of girls’ soccer talent in the Pikes Peak region. From goal scorers and creators to defense and keepers, the area has something to offer in all four classifications. Rampart and Fountain Valley look to be the best in Class 5A and 2A, respectively, while the pecking order in 4A and 3A is more convoluted.

Class 5A

Top area teams: Rampart (13-2), Pine Creek (7-6-1)

The Rams’ 3-0 win over Pine Creek on April 12 proved to be the difference in the Class 5A CSML standings. Rampart is 24th in the latest RPI rankings with Pine Creek 30th.

Top scorer: Jordan Garrett, Rampart

The sophomore led a balanced attack for the Rams, scoring 12 goals in 15 games. Garrett scored twice in wins over Vista Ridge, Sand Creek and Fountain-Fort Carson. She also has 10 assists.

Top creator: Kaitlyn Wilcox, Rampart

Wilcox, a junior, share the team lead with Garrett with 10 assists for Rampart. She had three assists in a win over Mesa Ridge and added a pair of helpers in two other games. 

Top defense: Rampart

The Rams’ defense has allowed just 11 goals through 15 games. During a 10-game winning streak, the Rams have outscored opponents 54-2. Rampart has only allowed multiple goals in one game. Senior goalkeeper Samantha Sallie made 10 saves in the clean sheet against the Eagles.

Class 4A

Top area teams: The Classical Academy (11-1-2), Sand Creek (11-3-1), Cheyenne Mountain (9-4-2), Palmer Ridge (9-3-3)

Cheyenne Mountain and Sand Creek split the 4A/5A Pikes Peak Athletic Conference league title after drawing 1-1 Tuesday, as each team finished 5-1-1 in the league. The Classical Academy went 8-0 and did not allow a goal in Class 4A CSML action. At 13, Cheyenne Mountain has the best RPI ranking with TCA (16), Palmer Ridge (17) and Sand Creek (19) also in the top 20.

Top scorer: Sydney Lasater, Sand Creek

The striker scored goals in bunches as a freshman. Her 32 goals is tied for third in the state regardless of classification. She had five games where she scored three or more goals. She’s also recorded 13 assists.

Top creator: Jayden Davis, Sand Creek

Davis and Lasater proved to be a dangerous tandem in their first year together for the Scorpions. Davis, a junior, has a team-high 14 assists, tied for the most of any player in the area. She’s Sand Creek’s second-leading scorer with 15 goals.

Top defense: The Classical Academy

The Titans have conceded just six goals through their first 14 games. Three of those goals came in a 3-1 loss to Cheyenne Mountain on April 3. Goalkeeper Lauren Fletch and the Titan defense haven’t allowed a goal since.

Class 3A

Top area teams: Colorado Springs Christian School (12-1), Manitou Springs (13-2), St. Mary’s (11-3)

The Lions were sixth in the latest 3A RPI standings before losing to Manitou Springs 5-0 on Thursday.  The win gave Manitou Springs the Region 2 title. St. Mary's won Region 1, going 6-0. The Mustangs and Pirates were eighth and ninth, respectively, in the RPI.

Top scorer: Kait Halverson, Colorado Springs Christian School

The junior entered her final game of the regular season having already scored 32 goals, tying Lasater for third in the state. She had scored in every game and had been held to one goal just twice before Thursday.

Top creator: Claire O’Connor, St. Mary’s and Caileen Sienknecht, Manitou Springs

Both O’Connor and Sienknecht have 14 assists on the season and five games with multiple helpers.

Top defense: Manitou Springs

The Mustangs have allowed four goals through their first 15 games and have not conceded multiple goals in any game. Goalkeeper Alyssa Holladay has handled a majority of the minutes in goal, allowing just two scores with 29 saves. The Mustangs shut down the CSCS attack Thursday.

Class 2A

Top area teams: Fountain Valley (11-3), Colorado Springs School (4-7-1)

The Danes' three losses come to Manitou Springs, St. Mary’s and CSCS. The reward is the No. 2 spot in the latest RPI rankings, while Colorado Springs School sits just outside the top 10. Fountain Valley owns a 3-1 win over CSS on April 28.

Top scorer: Ani Love, Fountain Valley

Love, a senior, scored one of her 22 goals in the win over CSS. She scored six goals in each of the Danes’ first two games and later had a hat trick against Trinidad. She’s scored in nine of 14 games and has registered a team-high six assists.

Top creator: Ali Graham, Colorado Springs School

The senior directs things in the Kodiak midfield where she’s distributed a team-best seven assists in 12 games. Five of those helpers came against Ellicott, a game she also scored in. Graham also set up a goal against Fountain Valley. Her nine goals are second on the team.

Top defense: Fountain Valley

Tilly Rahm, a sophomore goalkeeper, has five clean sheets and 49 saves, while senior Ava Rahm has three clean sheets and 12 saves to her name. Seven of the team’s 13 goals allowed came in the three losses to 3A opponents.
