After seven consecutive losing seasons that produced a combined record of 12-58 - Air Academy went out of state for its newest football coach.
Earlier this week, Air Academy announced it had hired Derek Smith from Florida to take over a football program that hasn't had a winning season since 2008.
Smith has nearly two decades of coaching experience, according to Air Academy athletic director Blue Anderson, who sent out a press release.
In 19 years of coaching, Smith has done so at both the high school and college levels. He also has four years experience as an athletic director.
In the fall, as the head coach, Smith led Viera (Fla.) High to the 7A state championship game, finishing as runner-up. He also was a part of two state titles at Palm Bay (Fla.) back in 2000 and 2002 as an assistant head coach.
Last season, Air Academy went 3-7 under Mike Roof. In Roof's second stint with the Kadets - lasting three seasons - he finished with a record of 5-25. The four years prior to Roof included seasons with win totals of two, four, zero and one.
The Kadets went 6-4 in 2008.
