Class 3A state tournament

Eaton 9, St. Mary's 3

At Butch Butler Field in Greeley: The No. 2 Reds jumped to a 4-1 lead in the fourth inning, and St. Mary's — making its first state playoff appearance in three years — couldn't recover.

The No. 6 Pirates (19-8) cut the deficit to 4-2 but ultimately ended their postseason run in the consolation bracket. Anthony Depner gave up only two hits in 3 2/3 innings but both were home runs.

Josh White was also solid for the Pirates, earning three hits and one double.

"Just the fact that we played 27 games is a testament to Colorado high school baseball," Pirates coach Bill Percy said. "We set an all-time high for victories in a season, 19. Our pitching staff was the difference all year long. A 2.05 ERA heading into the playoffs with flawless defense the last half of the season made a huge difference."

They opened the state tournament with a 6-3 loss to Lutheran on Friday before falling to Eaton (22-4), which will continue in the consolations bracket with a game next Friday against No. 7 Resurrection Christian (19-7).

The Pirates qualified for the state tournament after winning the Tri-Peaks League and Region 8 titles.
