St. Mary’s coach Mark Beranek is stepping down as the St. Mary’s boys’ basketball coach.
Beranek recently resigned as the business manager at St. Mary’s and also decided to “make a clean break from everything and enjoy retirement,” Pirates athletic director Dennis Vigil told The Gazette in an email Monday.
Beranek helmed the Pirates for five seasons, according to the email.
The Pirates went 14-10 this season, reaching the round of 16 in the Class 3A state playoffs. The Pirates were just one of two teams in Colorado to hand eventual 3A state champion Colorado Springs Christian School a loss. The Pirates went 2-1 against the Lions in the Lions’ back-to-back state championship seasons.
In his five seasons, Beranek’s teams never finished below .500. They compiled a record of 72-42. They also reached the round of 16 in 2014-15.
