THE GAZETTE

BOYS BASKETBALL

No. 5 Mitchell (1-0) at No. 1 Doherty (1-0), 8 tonight

The Spartans defense held 4A Conifer of the Jeffco League to only eight points in the first half and only 15 through three quarters. That kind of performance will be a great help as the team's inexperienced forwards develop against a good Marauders squad.

No. 2 Sierra (1-0) vs. Littleton (1-0), 8 tonight (Palmer gym)

The Pikes Peak Tip Off Classic semifinal should be tough for the Stallions who will be bolstered by the return of Eric Fielder.

No. 3 Sand Creek (0-0) vs. Falcon (0-0), 5 tonight

The Scorpions opener at the Rampart Tip Off Classic should be a good test with four returning starters back from last year's team. Nick Fox and Damian Terry should dominate inside.

No. 4 Liberty (0-1) at Douglas County (0-0), 7 p.m. Tuesday

The Lancers will try to bounce back from a tough 84-82 loss to Cherokee Trail with a road game a week later. The 5A Huskies should be ready to play with two games over the weekend.

No. 6 Rampart vs. Cheyenne Mountain (1-0), 6:30 p.m. Monday

The host Rams conclude the Rampart Tip Off Classic against the 4A Indians, who look revived with the addition of guard Robbie Belveal, who followed his father and coach Chad to the school.

No. 7 Coronado (1-0) at Wasson (0-0), 7 p.m. Friday

The Cougars' commitment to defense and the play of Ben Foley and Devon Burnett should help the Cougars contend this winter. Tanner Hidrogo leads the Thunderbirds into their opener.

Fountain-Fort Carson (0-1) at No. 8 Palmer (0-1), 5 tonight

Both teams look to improve after rough season openers in the consolation bracket of the Pikes Peak Tip Off Classic.

No. 9 Lewis-Palmer (0-0) at Chaparral 0-1), 7 p.m. Tuesday

The Rangers have an extra week to practice. They may need it against a team that lost 72-71 to defending state champion Denver East Tuesday night.

No. 10 Widefield (0-1) vs. Overland (0-1), 6:30 tonight.

The 4A Metro contenders are led by Josh Padilla, Raymond Canty and Sebastian Gilmore into the Rampart tournament..

GIRLS BASKETBALL

No. 1 Mesa Ridge (1-0) at Coronado (0-1), 7 p.m. Saturday

The Grizzlies have another game to cinch up the defense against a rebuilding Cougars program.

No. 2 Sierra (1-0) vs. Douglas County (2-0), 6:30 tonight

The Stallions face a tough test against the 5A Huskies, who already have wins over No. 5 Mitchell and Palmer this week.

No. 3 Doherty (0-1) vs. Ralston Valley (0-1)

Spartans will look to bounce back against the Mustangs in consolation game at the Pikes Peak Tip Off Classic.

No. 4 Rampart (0-1) at No. 5 Mitchell (0-1)

The potential 5A Metro champ Rams and host and 4A Metro contending Marauders should make for a hard-fought game.

No. 6 Air Academy (1-0) at Lewis-Palmer (0-0), 7 p.m. Friday

The Kadets look to have reloaded judging by win over Loveland.

Thomas Jefferson (0-0) at No. 7 Widefield (1-0), 7 tonight

Expect the Gladiators to still challenge in the 4A Metro thanks to the play of Mindi Church and Kim Herndon.

No. 8 St. Mary's (0-0) at Jefferson Academy (0-0), 3 p.m. today

Junior Christina Whitelaw leads the Pirates against the 3A Frontier Conference contending Jaguars.

Estes Park (1-0) at No. 9 CSCS (0-0), 7 tonight

The regional playoff contender is a tough opener for the Lions.

Lewis-Palmer (0-0) at No. 10 Pine Creek (0-0), 7 p.m. Saturday

The Rangers will have a game to hone their full court press, but the Eagles should handle it well with four starters returning.
