Rampart boys end 13-year Metros track title drought
Comments 0 | Recommend 0Rampart's Devin Mohn won four events to propel his team to its first title in 13 years at the Colorado Springs Metro League Championships at Garry Berry Stadium.
In 5A girls, Doherty's Carly Allen won four events to carry an injury-depleted Spartans squad to its third straight title as the two-day track and field event concluded Saturday.
The Rampart boys topped second-place Palmer 184-119 for its first league title in 13 years. The Doherty girls beat Palmer 149-120.5 for their third straight league title.
The Sierra boys beat out Widefield 148.5 - 111.5 and the Widefield girls topped Sierra 126-104.
In the 4A ranks, Kelby Dias won three events for the Sierra boys and the Widefield girls used depth to garner a team title.
Mohn, a junior, won the 100 dash in 11.05 seconds, as well as the 200 and 400 and anchored the winning 400 relay team to pile up 40 points for the Rams.
"I was expecting (to win) the 100, 200 and 4x100," said Mohn, who won the 400 on Friday. "We prepared for this meet; been working hard in practice."
Senior Josh McMillin won the triple jump and pole vault for the Rams. Jeff Cook won the 3,200 with teammates Nick Saulnier and Simon McIntire taking second and fourth for 23 points.
Coach Randy Barringer used the title drought to motivate his team.
"We went in the gym and looked at the wall this week," he said. "I told them ‘It's been 13 years. Let's go in looking to put something on the wall again.'"
Dusty Solis won the 800 and 1,600 for Coronado. Palmer's Brendan Jackson won both hurdles.
Allen, a senior, had the best day of her career, winning the long and triple jumps and both hurdles. It was the first time she won four events at one meet.
"This one was about my team," Allen said. "We were hurting with injuries, so I was trying to make up the difference."
Doherty also won the 3,200 relay.
LaTraia Scott of Coronado won the 200 and 400. Palmer's Karen Wyatt won the discus and shot put.
In 4A, Dias won both hurdles for the Stallions and the long jump.
"I'm mostly proud of the long jump," Dias said. "We needed points and I was thrown in there to do it for the team. I was glad to come out on top."
The Stallions sealed the boys' title with Tony Thompson winning the 800 as teammates Steven Zinn and Corey Breeden took third and fourth for 21 points. Sierra also won the 1,600 and 3,200 relays.
Widefield's Patrick Richards won the 200 and 400 and finished second in the 100 behind defending state champion Keenen Ballage of Falcon. Wes Rickman and Kevin Johnson finished first and second in both the 1,600 and 3,200 for Falcon.
The Widefield girls got individual titles from Joy Warrington (shot put), Desarey Balloon (300 hurdles), Mindi Cooper-Church (triple jump). The 1,600 relay team won with its best time this year (4:08.38) after Sina Good, running the second leg, turned a 15-meter gap into a 15-meter lead over Fountain-Fort Carson.
"We have a lot of depth that really helped us out," Gladiators coach Fred Marjerrison said. "The relays energize the team to see them working together."
Sierra's Samantha Thompson won the 800 and the 1,600. Joy O'Hare, of Cheyenne Mountain, won the 100, 200 and 400 dashes.
