4A All-stars sweep 5A standouts

Cheyenne Mountain's Dan Crepps capped a night filled with dunks, superb plays and friendly competition with a play fitting the occasion. Crepps buried a 3-pointer with two seconds left to give the Class 4A boys an 81-80 victory over their 5A counterparts before a big crowd at Doherty on Thursday.
That made it a 4A sweep in the 4A-5A Metro League Basketball Classic as the 4A girls grabbed a big lead and won 64-56.
Crepps, a senior point guard at Cheyenne Mountain, made his second 3-pointer of the fourth quarter after Sierra's D.J. Dickson stole the ball at halfcourt.
"This is my first 4A-5A All-Star game and it's just really special to go out like that," said Crepps, who had nine points.
Liberty's sensational sophomore Wes McKenzie (18 points) led all scorers while Fountain-Fort Carson's Terrance Hutchins (12) and Mesa Ridge's Jamal Dickerson (10) aided the 4A cause.
The 5A boys were led by Palmer's Reggie Jackson (14), who only scored on dunks, Doherty's Bryse Velasquez (10) and Sand Creek's Will Bell (nine).
"I'm real surprised we lost," said Mitchell's George Pollard-Felder, "because we had some of the best players in the state on our team. We just didn't execute at the end."
Pollard-Felder said fun is the biggest objective.
"You don't like these guys during the year because they're on the other team but it's a lot of fun to play with them."
The 4A girls led 34-19 at halftime but 5A got within 61-56 in the final minute on Palmer's Emmalee Fladland's 3-pointer.
Mesa Ridge freshman Kaitlyn Mileto (14) led 4A along with Harrison's Jordy Stephensen (nine), Falcon's Amber Wilmore (nine) and Fountain-Fort Carson's D'Shara Strange (eight).
Mitchell's Skylar Johnson (11) and Air Academy's Wendy Sherman (nine) topped 5A. Fladland (seven) chipped in as did the Air Academy duo of Krista Cona (seven) and Meghan Hollenga (seven).
Wilmore said the win was about earning respect.
"I think 4A doesn't have the respect 5A does," Wilmore said. "We're smaller schools so people think we don't have the players they do."
"They came out harder and were a little more serious," Sherman said.
Pine Creek junior Shannon Rousseau beat 15 opponents in the girls' 3-point contest. She bested Widefield's Kayla Schuerkamp 14-8 in the final round.
