Mustangs eliminated
Comments 0 | Recommend 0CSCS, Simla win both matches to advance to semis
DENVER - Bridget O’Connor’s warning proved prophetic. She wishes it wasn’t so.
The Manitou Springs coach had said her team’s No. 1 seeding in the Class 3A state tournament didn’t mean much. Roosevelt, the No. 8 seed, and Valley, the No. 5, both beat the Mustangs on Friday at the Denver Coliseum.
“Disappointment is kind of an understatement,” O’Connor said.
The Mustangs (21-7) led 2-0 in both matches but lost 15-13 in the fifth game of each. Their season concludes today with a match against Holy Family, but the Mustangs can’t earn a spot in the semifinals.
The top two teams from each pool earn spots in the semifinals.
“It’s been a great year,” O’Connor said. “We can come back strong tomorrow and finish on a high note.”
Manitou Springs lost 24-26, 20-25, 25-17, 25-22, 15-13 to Roosevelt, despite leading 9-6 in Game 5, and 23-25, 24-26, 25-15, 25-21, 15-13 to Valley.
CSCS (21-7), the No. 6 seed, clinched a spot in the semifinals by winning twice. The Lions have won the last three state titles.
“We’re very pleased, especially with the young team we have,” CSCS coach Mike Broekhuis said. “At times, we have all freshmen and sophomores on the floor.”
CSCS beat The Classical Academy — they're 2-2 against each other this season — 25-20, 13-25, 25-22, 20-25, 15-6. The Lions then disposed of No. 2 Faith Christian 25-16, 25-21, 25-23.
TCA rebounded from its loss to CSCS with a 25-23, 25-21, 25-20 sweep of No. 7 Lamar. The Titans play No. 2 Faith Christian — both teams lost in the semifinals last year — to complete pool play, with the winner earning a berth in the semifinals.
“Losing was so disappointing, but we knew we still had two games to get where we want to be,” said TCA senior Lydia Blaha, who will play for Boise State. “We have a big height advantage on Faith Christian. We match up well with them.”
In the 2A tourney, No. 1 seed Simla remains unbeaten. The Cubs swept No. 8 Mancos 25-15, 25-12, 25-15 and topped No. 5 Resurrection Christian 25-16, 25-17, 20-25, 27-25.
“Our bench came in and did a good job,” said coach Susan Snyder, who led Simla to state titles in 1994 and ’96. “Everybody needs a little help from their friends.”
