Pikes Peak No. 7 Coronado 65, No. 10 Widefield 52

At Coronado: The Cougars defense was ready for its season opener to record a win over 4A Metro contender Widefield (0-1).

"Our defense was real good," said Coronado coach Dan Hugill. "it was all about the defense tonight. Widefield played real hard."

Cougars junior Devon Burnett scored 25 points, including four 3-pointers. Ben Foley made seven assists.


No. 5 Mitchell 49, Monarch 46 OT

At Pikes Peak Tip Off Classic: David Snipes scored three of his 17 points in overtime to lift the Marauders (1-0) in the first round of the tournament. MonDarrius Benson added 10 points.

Mark Stanford scored 16 for Monarch (0-1). Mitchell plays No. 1 Doherty, 63-37 winners over Conifer, in an 8 p.m. semifinal Thursday.


Cherokee Trail 84, No. 4 Liberty 82

At Liberty: Liberty's plan to take the final shot went awry after Cherokee Trail's Micah Green stripped the ball on a Liberty drive toward the hoop. He then dribbled the ball the length of the court to make a running bank shot with three seconds to go to win it.

"It was really an exciting game," said Lancers coach Jim Masterson, "It went back and forth."

Matt Trimpey pumped in 29 points to lead the Lancers (0-1). Wes McKenzie added 14. Green scored 20 for the Cougars (1-0).


Harrison 53, Canon City 50

At Cañon City: Dante Thompson hit his 3-pointer, his only basket of the game, with two seconds left to win the nonconference game.

The Panthers (2-0) saw their five-point lead vanish in the final minutes before they made a defensive stop with 30 seconds left to set up the final possession. Harrison beat Air Academy, 73-66, on Monday.


GIRLS BASKETBALL

No. 2 Sierra 59, Loveland 54

At Pikes Peak Tip Off Classic: Chelsea Rotondo scored 23 points while Janeesa ‘Chucky" Jeffery added 16 to lead the Stallions (1-0) into the semifinals of the tournament at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.


Douglas County 60, Palmer 52

At Pikes Peak Tip Off Classic: Douglas County (2-0) relied on Katie Hilbig's 26 points, including 10-of-14 shooting from the free throw line, to hold on in the first round.

"We had a pretty good opportunity but they got in a run and we panicked a little,' said Terrors coach Dave Shackelford. "We're young at the varsity level and it showed. We had to foul Hilbig and that's who they wanted us to foul.""

Freshman Taylor Torres scored 14 for the Terrors (0-1).


No. 1 Mesa Ridge 82, Pueblo East 55

At Mesa Ridge: Kaitlin Mileto scored 21 points while Brandi Collins added 18 as the Grizzlies (1-0) shook off Pueblo East despite giving up seven 3-pointers to the Eagles (0-1).

"We still have to get better defensively,' said Mesa Ridge coach Eric Hulen. "We had three starters in foul trouble so we have to get smarter."


The Classical Academy 51, Denver Tech 42

AT TCA: The Titans (1-0) took a 35-18 lead into halftime and held on thanks in part to 12 points and 12 rebounds for Kerri Taylor.


Brighton 62, Harrison 40

At Boulder Valley Invitational: Jennifer Ingargiola's 16 points weren't enough as Brighton (1-0) out scored the Panthers 16-1 in the second quarter to pull away in the opening round of the tournament.

Harrison (0-1) plays in the consolation bracket on Thursday.


Pueblo South 56, No. 3 Doherty 51

At Pikes Peak Tip Off Classic: Pueblo South (1-0) rallied in the second half to advance to the tournament semifinal Thursday despite 13 points from Leah Richardson..
