Athlete of the Week: Morgan Broekhuis
Comments 0 | Recommend 0Soph does her part to sustain dynasty
Colorado Springs Christian School sophomore Morgan Broekhuis helped lead the Lions to the program’s fourth straight Class 3A state volleyball title. For the 6-foot-4 hitter/setter’s efforts, Broekhuis is The Gazette’s high school Athlete of the Week.
How did it feel to win the state title?
It’s amazing. It was just so much fun. More rewarding than last year’s just because it was more like us this year and not as much of the other girls who left. It just feels amazing. It was like an adrenaline rush. When you were in there, it was just crazy.
What has the response been from other students?
Most of the kids knew so it was great. Like in the hallway, people are always like “Good job,” and they’re like “We’re so proud of you,” so I mean everyone’s just happy and encouraging. It’s just kind of a fun atmosphere to come back to.
What did you do to celebrate?
We went to Fuddruckers. It’s a hamburger place. And that’s what the other class had done so that’s what we do.
Were you aware of the history involved?
I mean, people are always like “Oh you have to do it because that would be four and that would be so cool,” and they’re always like “Just keep it going.” So I mean we were like “We’ll try.” So we knew how important it was, and we were talking to the girls that had left and they were telling us how they wanted us so badly to win and keep it going and so we tried our hardest to win.
Do you feel like it’s a dynasty?
I don’t know. I feel like if we just keep it going, and I feel like it’s a great accomplishment that we have been able to have because four in a row is pretty crazy.
Do you think you can get No. 6 your senior year?
You know, that would be the coolest thing ever. I would love that. That’s something I think we will work for just to have and always remember.
Do you play club also?
Yeah, I play for Colorado Juniors. We just had tryouts yesterday, so I’ll be on their team.
Do you ever get tired going from high school volleyball to club?
Sometimes it’s like “Just give us a week maybe to relax,” (laughs). No, I’m excited to start. We have a good group of girls on the team so I’m excited for that too.
Does high school help you with club or is it vice versa?
I would say that playing club helps more for high school because club’s just a more tense and competitive atmosphere compared to high school. So I think that the people who play club have the better skills in high school.
Do you have any college plans?
Yeah, I mean I’ve gotten all these letters from all these colleges. They are making me think about it as early as it is. But, yeah I want to go on and play college volleyball.
So when do you relax?
I don’t know. When I’m at home I just like to sit around. I have an awesome group of friends, and we just do fun stuff. Like yesterday we just rented like two movies and sat and watched the movies because we just needed some time to relax.
What’s your favorite movie?
Me and my brother have this favorite movie. It’s called “The Little Rascals,” and we’ve watched it since we were little and we can quote like every word of it.
If you won the lottery, what’s the first thing you’d buy?
I would go and have a custom pair of jeans made just for me. Just because I have the hardest time finding jeans ever. I would find someone to make a custom pair of jeans just for me so that they would fit perfectly.
