BASEBALL REGIONALS
Forgive Air Academy coach Glenn Millhauser and his Kadets for looking ahead to the second round of the 5A tournament at Cherokee Trail High School today. A potential game against No. 2 seed and defending champion Rocky Mountain (18-3), the team that knocked out the Kadets last spring in the state semifinals, is hard to ignore.
"It gives you a mental edge; it makes you a little more aggressive against a team that's beat you," Millhauser said. "It would be great to get that rematch."
But first, the No. 3 seed Kadets (20-1) must defeat No. 6 Arapahoe (16-5) at 10 a.m.
They will rely on their leaders. Center fielder Ron Burton is one of only three to bat .600 or better during his career at Air Academy. Auburn-bound pitcher baseman Dexter Price is the ace.
In 3A, Manitou Springs garnered a No. 7 seed and drew No. 2 Erie (15-5) for a 12:30 p.m. first-round game at Jackson Field in Greeley.
"This is really satisfying," Mustangs coach Rob Quarry said. "They're a good team from that Patriot League up north. The Patriot and the Metro in Denver are the two tough conferences in the state year in and year out."
District wins over Holy Family and Valley should have the Mustangs (16-4) prepared after pitchers Jeremiah Struble and Alex Reiter came up.
"They're both a couple of horses," Quarry said. Calhan (13-4) and Kiowa (16-4) play Saturday in the 2A region in Niwot.
TRACK REGIONALS
Four two-day meets involving area teams start today, with the fifth - the 2A Region 1 meet in Limon - on Saturday.
The 5A Region 3 meet is at Lewis-Palmer, where the favored Rampart boys are led by sprinter Devin Mohn. The Doherty boys should contend as will a number of individuals from other schools. For the girls, Coronado sprinter LaTraia Scott is a potential multi-event winner along with Palmer's Karen Wyatt.
The 4A Region 4 meet will be held concurrently at Lewis-Palmer. The Sierra boys and girls are favored. The 4A Region 3 and 3A Region 1 meets are at Garry Berry Stadium where the Pueblo West boys and Cheyenne Mountain girls should contend for titles. In 3A, which features Tri-Peaks schools, look for The Classical Academy to sweep the titles.
