SPARTAN JUMPER UNDER PRESSURE

THE GAZETTE

Doherty senior Carly Allen won both 5A hurdles and the long and triple jumps to lead the Spartan girls to a thirdstraight Colorado Springs Metro Championship on Saturday. For her accomplishments, Allen is The Gazette's Athlete of the Week.

What is your favorite type of music?

Right now, I like country, but it changes. I like all different songs from all different genres.

Who is in your CD player right now?

Taylor Swift.

What is your favorite subject in school?

Seminary. I love it. It's my break from the day. It's a church class and I love getting away from everything else from my day and just focusing on that. Having a break is really nice.

Are you involved in church outside of school?

Yeah, I'm very involved. I'm in a youth group. I belong to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. I love it. It's my whole life.

Would you consider yourself a spiritual leader on the team?

I guess. Maybe a little bit. We pray before every run, and in our relays, we'll say a little prayer before we run. I'm not some huge spiritual leader or anything, but I try to be a good example.

Doherty has been a powerhouse for track the past couple of years.

Yeah, this year's been great. We're hurting with injuries, but we still have a real strong team.

Do you do anything before a race or jumps to pump yourself up?

Pray (laughs). Other than that, not really anything else.

What are your goals for state this year?

I'm not really thinking in terms of places. I just want my times to get better from last year again. So, I'm not really concerned whether I win or not; I just want to beat my best.

Do you feel like you're favored to win your events?

Yeah, I definitely feel the pressure to win (laughs).

What are your college plans?

I'm hoping to run at BYU (Brigham Young University) next year.

Have you been accepted?

Yeah, I was accepted and then I've just been in touch with their coach. It's still up in the air whether I'll run or not.

Are you hoping for a scholarship?

It depends on this season, and if I don't have a scholarship, I'll just walk on.

Who is your hero?

My dad's one of my biggest heroes. He handles things very well. He's always calm and really laid back about life. He doesn't get stressed and really makes me want to push for my goals and do my best. He just loves me no matter what, whether I won or lose. He supports me.
