DENVER • Title runs for Pine Creek’s two remaining players ended on Friday’s second day of the 5A boys’ state tennis tournament.

No. 2 singles player Andrew Pack lost in the semifinals 6-4, 6-3 to Matt Sayre of Regis. Pack still had a playback match for a chance at the consolation bracket title. However, Calvin Ward of George Washington outlasted Pack 7-5, 5-7, 7-5, ending his season short of a third- or fourth-place finish.

“It was a good match and both players worked very hard,” Pine Creek coach Dave Lehman said. “It’s unfortunate that Andrew didn’t come out on top, but he battled.”

The other Eagle left standing, No. 3 singles player McKay Inman, got a playback match after losing in the quarterfinals Thursday.

After winning his first playback 7-6, 6-0, Inman lost to Jacob Spreyer of Regis 7-6, 7-6, also stopping him short of a consolation title match.

“I was hoping to do better this weekend, but I think I did good overall,” Inman said. “I won two matches and lost two, and I lost to some really good players.”

Pack’s semifinal run was the furthest a Pine Creek player has gone since 2005.

“These guys did a great job this season, and I am very proud of them,” Lehman said. “If we would’ve had a little different draw here or there it might’ve been a different outcome, but that’s just tennis.”
