Palmer’s Zook wins Metro League-opening Marauder Invitational to lead Terrors to title

THE GAZETTE

Palmer junior Jamie Zook shot an 83 to highlight the first full round of the season for many area girls golfers on Wednesday at the Marauder Invitational at Patty Jewett Golf Course.

The par-73, 18-hole tournament opened Colorado Springs Metro League play a week later than scheduled. The next scheduled stop, the Cougar Classic today at Kissing Camels Golf Course, will likely be rescheduled after Wednesday's snowstorm.

"It was our first full tournament, so even though the weather was kind of cold and windy, it was good to get out and play," Zook, a 2007 5A state qualifier, said.

Zook's 42 on the front nine and 41 on the back nine led Palmer to a win with 284 strokes to runner-up Doherty's 287. Pine Creek was third with 293.

"I wasn't expecting to play as well as I did, but I just really focused, especially on the last nine," Zook said.

Teammate Josie Williams shot a 98 to help Palmer's bid for the team title.

"Overall, we knew we would be in it," Terrors coach Jason Kohl said. "We have a very strong golfer in Jamie Zook, and Josie works here so she's had a lot of practice on this course."

Defending Marauder Invitational champ Maree Wurtz led the Spartans with an 87, good for second place, while teammate Paige Crawford shot a 92.

Perennial favorite Cheyenne Mountain finished seventh with a 305, just ahead of Sand Creek (306).

"Sand Creek has a very wellrounded team this year, and Cheyenne Mountain is always good," Kohl said. "We played well today, but there are several girls on our team and other teams that could score better in different weather conditions."

The Indians were led by thirdplace finisher Justine Kemp, who shot an 88.
