Case against Widefield hoops star is dismissed
Comments 0 | Recommend 0The El Paso County District Attorney's office decided not to file charges Wednesday against Widefield boys basketball player Drew Felton, according to court records.
Fourth District Court Judge Gregory Werner dismissed the case after the prosecution moved to drop the charges at Felton's arraignment.
A spokesman for the DA's office declined comment.
Felton's lawyer, Douglas Price, said it was unclear if the prosecution dropped the case because of insufficient evidence or a critical witness was unwilling to testify.
"I was somewhat surprised," Price said. "There was very little communication from the DA's office concerning this case."
Price said other charges are possible but had received no information.
Felton, 18, could not be reached for comment Wednesday. Price said the family would release a statement today.
According to court records, Felton faced a possible felony sexual assault charge after an incident Feb. 24 involving a 17-yearold girl at a home in the Widefield area.
El Paso County Sheriff's deputies arrested Felton on March 11. He was released on bail later that day.
The senior was not with the team for the 4A state semifinal and championship games March 13 and 15. Widefield lost to Abraham Lincoln 63-59 in the title game. Felton was Widefield's leading rebounder and third-leading scorer.
