CSML TRACK: Doherty sweeps in 5A
Comments 0 | Recommend 0The Doherty boys and girls took different paths in sweeping the titles in the 5A Metro League Track and Field Championships that concluded Saturday at Garry Berry Stadium.
Leading by 17 points after Friday's events, the Spartan girls cruised to a 132-108 win over Pine Creek, while the boys nipped Fountain-Fort Carson 127.33-126.5 in the last race of the meet.
In 4A, the Widefield girls topped Lewis-Palmer 138-107 to repeat as champions, while the Castle View boys beat Falcon 121-114.
Junior captain Kenny Chambers led the Spartans, winning the 100-meter dash and triple jump in the morning. Anchoring the 400 relay in the afternoon, he outran Rampart standout Devin Mohn for the win, then posted the fastest 200 (21.47 seconds) in the state this year.
"Our coach all week said they were 30-40 points ahead of us," Chambers said. "The captains, we talked to the team and told them we can get them."
"You have to take it as it comes, and this is what happens when people don't put in as much effort as you'd like them to," Trojans coach Ben Montoya said.
Sophomore Jordan Rand won the long jump and ran on the top 400 relay Saturday - after winning the triple jump Friday - to lead the Spartans' girls.
"We've built a good girls' program we're pretty proud of, but we didn't think we'd win by that many points," coach Rob Duensing said.
In 4A, the Widefield girls dominated in the sprints. Led by GinAsia Hamilton, who won the 200 and 400 on Friday, Widefield placed six runners in either the 100, 200 or 400, with five finishing in the top four in the two-day meet.
"It just wasn't me talking to them," coach Fred Majerrison said. "It was them talking about what they needed to do to get better to win this league title. It just says a lot for these kids."
Sierra senior Kelby Dias won the boys' 110- and 300 hurdles Saturday, as well as the long jump and 400 relay Friday.
