Lewis-Palmer falls short of top-10 finish

May 17, 2008 12:19 am

Lewis-Palmer finished 11th at the 5A state boys swimming meet and broke three more school records in the 100 freestyle, 100 butterfly and 400 freestyle relay on Friday at the Epic Pool Ice Center.

The Indians competed well but missed out on a chance for a top 10 finish after a disqualification in the 200 freestyle relay.

"It was a bad break and a little disappointing at the end with the disqualification, but we had a lot of swimmers that surpassed their best times," Rangers coach Alan Arata said.

Josh Day broke the school record in the 100 freestyle for the second day in a row with a sixth-place finish that tied the school's best finish in the state finals. Day also placed 14th in the 50 freestyle and helped his team place eighth in the 400 freestyle relay.

Mitchell finished 20th behind the strong swimming performance of Dane Van Arkel, who placed 12th in the 100 freestyle, 13th in the 50 freestyle and 14th as part of the 200 medley relay team.

Pine Creek's Gregg Hutto finished 13th in the 100 freestyle and 16th in the 50 freestyle.

Regis won its 14th 5A title in a row as Jay Kim broke an 11-year-old state record in the 200 individual medley.

In 4A, Cheyenne Mountain coach Pete Nichols thought Friday's preliminaries had a familiar feel. The Indians missed out on adding a third relay in today's state championship finals. They are seeded third in the 200 and 400 free relays.

"I thought we could have done better," Nichols said.

He will count on Pat Scally, who qualified with a third-best time in the 200 and second-best in the 500 freestyle, to score points in the those events to make up the difference.

"If he could hang on to those places in the championship round, it will help narrow the point difference and leave us with a working margin," said Nichols, who added that it will be a tight race between his team, Silver Creek, Mountain View, Conifer and Ralston Valley.

Devin Wahl qualified fourth in the 200 individual medley and third in the 500 freestyle. Senior Jeff Hansen is seeded fourth in the 50 and 100 freestyles.
