Athlete of the Week: Darius Turner, Doherty Football

Senior tailback Darius Turner ran for a Doherty school record 398 yards and four touchdowns in a 38-21 win over Palmer last Friday. He has 895 yards rushing this season and is well on his way to surpassing the 1,800 he ran for as a junior.

For his performance, Turner is The Gazette's Athlete of the Week.

Are you thinking about how many yards you’ve racked up while you’re playing?

Not really. I’m just thinking about winning first, and after the game it just hits me.

Who is your favorite athlete?

I would have to say LaDainian Tomlinson because he’s a great running back and I idolize his moves and things he does on the field and well as off the field.

What kinds of things off the field?

Like helping out with kids and stuff. He does all types of stuff like that.

What is your favorite movie?

“Saw II.” I like scary movies. I’m into that type of stuff.

What is your favorite sport to watch?

Track and field.

Do you have any favorite runners?

Maurice Green because he’s explosive and fast, you know. I wish I was as fast as him.

What is your favorite TV show?

“The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.”

What is your favorite food?

Pizza.

Least favorite food?

Lasagna.

What is your favorite kind of music?

R&B. I like rap too.

Favorite artist?

My favorite artist is Lil’ Wayne because he’s so talented in all his lyrics. Where he comes from . . . he says stuff that you wouldn’t even imagine hearing, you know. He makes you think so I like him a lot.

What are your college plans?

I have a lot of colleges looking at me, but I haven’t decided yet.

What are you doing to prepare for hopefully a football career in college?

Hard work, working after the season is over and preparing myself. Lifting weights and staying in shape.

What are your career goals?

I would like to major in business management. That’s something I want to get into.

What do you want to do with that?

Open up my own business, like clothing.

What is your favorite thing about living in Colorado Springs?

I like the mountains a lot.

Least favorite thing about living in Colorado Springs ?

The snow.

What are some personal goals that you have set for yourself this season?

Just helping my team out. I’m trying to take it one game at a time. You know, just come out with a victory and winning a state championship.

Least favorite TV show?

Something like “The Andy Milonakis Show.”

Do you ski or snowboard?

I’ve always wanted to, but I’ve never been yet. Hopefully someday I’ll be able to go.

Who is your favorite superhero?

I would have to say Flash. He’s fast and that’s what I’ve always wanted to be.

Who is your real-life hero?

Pretty much my whole family, just because how they raise me and all.
