Cheyenne Mountain keeps streak going
Comments 0 | Recommend 0 To give Thursday's achievement some perspective, consider that the seniors on Cheyenne Mountain's girls tennis team were not even born the last time their school failed to win a regional tennis title.
The Indians extended their streak of consecutive titles, relying on performances from No. 2 singles player Kristina Barber and all four doubles teams. The streak dates back at least 18 years, according to school officials.
"To be honest, at this time last year, with only two of my girls coming back, I certainly wasn't counting on us being able to win regionals again," Cheyenne Mountain coach Dave Adams said. "This is the first year Regis has been in our region, and we knew it would be a dogfight. We're pretty pumped up to be where we are."
All of Thursday's championship finals pitted Cheyenne Mountain players against those from Regis. The Indians were able to win five of the seven divisions to defeat Regis 85-76.
No. 1 singles player Kate Carroll of Regis defeated Indians sophomore Meha Semwal 6-3, 6-4.
"Carroll is a very consistent player who's beaten some of the best girls in the state," Adams said. "Meha pushed her there in the second set, but Carroll just didn't give."
Semwal could still qualify for state, pending the results of today's playback matches. The top two in each division will advance to the 4A state tournament in Pueblo next week.
After the first day of competition of the Region 6 meet in Pueblo, Fountain Valley's Clark Tatje will face Katie Fletcher of Ralston Valley for the No. 1 singles title. Tatje has defeated Fletcher twice this year.
Marie Dahlberg of Colorado Springs School will face Jennifer Prusse of Rock Canyon in the No. 2 singles championship match. Harrison's Mina Kang will play for the No. 3 singles title.
