THE GAZETTE

Morgan Broekhuis of Colorado Springs Christian School has another accomplishment to add to her list of high school achievements.

The senior outside hitter won the Gatorade Colorado Volleyball Player of the Year award for the second consecutive season, while leading her team to a sixth straight state championship.

The award not only honors the best volleyball player in Colorado, but also has academic and character credentials as well.

Broekhuis boasted a 3.73 GPA, was a member of the National Honor Society and has raised money for cancer research through fundraisers while at CSCS.

Broekhuis has been such an impressive student that she will graduate early from high school and attend Nebraska in the spring. She also has a scholarship to play volleyball for the Huskers, one of the best teams in the nation perennially.

She recorded 465 kills and 411 assists as she led the Lions to a 30-0 record, and another state title. She has won numerous other awards, such as the 2009 MaxPreps.com Colorado Player of the Year, and also is a three-time All-Tournament MVP.

Broekhuis is the second CSCS player to win the Gatorade award. Lisa Meeter won in 2006-07.

She is also now eligible to win the Gatorade National Player of the Year Award, which will be announced in late December, and considers only the top 50 players in the nation.

Broekhuis also was a member of the U.S. Women’s Junior National Team at the FIVB World Championships in Mexico last July.

The sky seems to be the limit for Broekhuis, as she continues onto Nebraska, and possibly into Olympic competition in the future.
