Sierra sprints to victory over Widefield in boys' basketball
Comments 0 | Recommend 0The Sierra boys’ basketball team got running early and never looked back.
The Pikes Peak 5A-4A No. 1 Stallions scored five of their first seven points on fastbreaks Thursday night, and Jahmall Fountain came off the bench to lead the team with 17 points in a 61-31 win at Widefield.
The Gladiators (12-7, 7-3 4A Metro) closed to within 17-14 on a pair of technical free throws by Josh Padilla, but Fountain scored a putback to increase Sierra's lead to five. Calvin Brown hit a field goal for the Stallions (16-2, 10-0), and Fountain hit back-to-back 3s to provide a 27-15 halftime lead.
“I told him I needed him off the bench to give us some energy, and he did that for us tonight,” coach Otis Johnson said.
Fountain also had seven rebounds, a pair of assists, a blocked shot and two steals - the last of which he turned into the game’s final basket.
“That’s what we rely on to get all our fastbreaks,” Fountain said. “It’s real fun. We don’t like a half-court offense if we don’t have to.”
Stallions center Wesley Gordon had another outstanding night on both ends of the court. The 6-foot-7 sophomore finished with 12 points, 10 rebounds and six blocks. Senior forward Kamryn Williams had nine rebounds and eight points.
“A lot of the time, we’ll have three or four kids in double digits,” Johnson said. “We might not have the kids that score 25 or 24, but we’ll have kids scoring 10, 12, 11 points here and there. I think that’s what makes us such a threat.”
Sierra scored 21 fastbreak points, transitioning off a defense that held Widefield leading scorer Raymond Canty to six points and 6-6 center Matt Sweitzer to five.
“Our transition game is always a threat,” Johnson said. “It was kicking on all cylinders tonight. Of course, it was defense that allowed us to do that.”
