MONUMENT - Pikes Peak No. 1 Doherty gave new coach Matt Wibbels his first victory Friday, dominating Lewis-Palmer in a 34-0 victory at Don Breese Stadium.
It was a familiar feeling for the Rangers, who watched Spartans running back Darius Turner run for 242 yards and four touchdowns on 27 carries in a little more than three quarters of work. He opened the second half with an 80-yard touchdown run down the left sideline on the first play from scrimmage.
Last season, Turner compiled 245 yards and the team totaled 310 yards rushing in a 31-21 Doherty win. On Friday, the Spartans ran for 288 yards as a team.
But Turner was not thinking about last year.
“This is a new year,” he said. “They’re a different team. We’re a different team. We were coming off a loss and just trying to get a victory.”
Turner didn’t take long to get rolling, running for 11 yards on the Spartans’ (1-1, 1-1 5A South Metro) first play from scrimmage and scored touchdowns on consecutive runs of 3 and 46 yards to give the Spartans a 14-0 lead by the end of the first quarter.
Fullback Jaden Terry scored from 10 yards out to make it 21-0 in the second quarter. After Turner’s 80-yarder to open the third, he punched in his fourth score from 1 yard out with 2:02 left in the third for the final margin.
“Our offensive line came out and executed,” Turner said. “They stayed on their blocks so I was able to get yardage.”
The win was important to the Spartans after losing 38-10 last week at Arvada West.
“Our defense stepped up and threw a shutout,” Wibbels said.
“We have a lot of young kids on the defense and they stepped up and showed that last week was a fluke and they can play.”
Coach Tony Ramunno and the Rangers (0-2) were disappointed, but he was optimistic that the team will bounce back.
“We’ve got to find a way to change what we’re doing, practice hard and stay together,” he said. “We’re going to get a victory. It’s coming.”
Quarterback Cree Clark had 35 yards rushing and was 7-of-10 passing for 27 yards for the Rangers, who finished with 81 yards of offense.
