Boys' tennis coach of the year
Comments 0 | Recommend 0DAVE ADAMS
CHEYENNE MOUNTAIN
Years coaching: 30
Years at school: 22
Reason behind coaching: He enjoys teaching both in the classroom and on the tennis court. As a veteran leader, he embraces the challenge of working with a new bunch of boys and girls each season.
Day job: English teacher
Family: Wife ( Derry), son (John, 18), daughter (Frances, 15)
Hometown: Rypon, Wis.
Alma mater: Colorado College
Favorite moment as a coach: For a man who has led the Indians to 14 state titles, the real joy comes in the smallest details. At practice, he will be working with a singles player or a doubles team and stressing a certain aspect of the game. The moments that he cherishes are when, after some practice time, the kids reach that point when they start to grasp the lesson and begin to see what they’re supposed to do.
Easiest way to find your doghouse: “Poor effort.”
Key to winning: “You have to have some kids with some ability, but then they’ve got to be coachable and willing to listen.”
From a player’s eyes: “It’s amazing this year — he brought nine new guys on the team, and we got second in state. And we were that close to winning state.” — Matt Bowser, junior who was state runner-up in No. 3 singles
