Girls' track preview: CSCS hurdlers push each other to new heights
Comments 0 | Recommend 0Colorado Springs Christian School has the best girls’ 100-meter hurdler in Class 3A. And it has the second best. The only problem is nobody is really sure which one is one is which.
Senior Becca Bultje is the defending state champion. Junior Tiffany Kenney, who finished second by 0.03 of a second, holds the Lions’ school record.
Lions’ coach Mike Caton described Bultje as a natural hurdler who loves the 100 hurdles. He says Kenney, a developing heptathlete, who won gold in the long jump as a freshman, is the best athlete he’s ever worked with.
They’ve been racing each other daily in practice since midway through Bultje’s sophomore year and both say they’re about even in wins and losses. Both say that’s the secret to their success.
“We were a little hesitant at first, but after a while we got used to it and we got excited to see who could do it today,” Bultje said. “It’s definitely been good for us … because we’re so competitive that we just push each other. We know we’re getting better by racing each other.”
For Bultje, as a sophomore the budding rivalry had special significance. She tore a quadriceps at the league championship meet as a freshman and thought about giving up track. She admits she still thinks about the injury and has the “memorabilia” of a lump in her thigh from scar tissue.
“It made me work harder, and I remembered how much I loved doing it,” Bultje said.
As the competition has grown it’s drawn them closer off the track.
“We help each other out as much as we can,” Kenney said. “We’re always encouraging each other. … We realize that’s what we’re there for. I don’t think we’ve ever been closer than we are now.”
“She’s like a sister to me,” Bultje said.
The pair carried the Lions to a seventh-place finish at state last year and could take them further this year. They may be working together in a relay or Bultje may be cheering Kenney on in the long jump. But if all goes according to plan, for 15 seconds they’ll put all of that aside.
“We’re going to do everything we can to beat each other,” Kenney said.
