BOYS’ BASKETBALL
Manitou Springs 59, Hotchkiss 57
At Hotchkiss: Sophomore Jesse Megyeri hit two free throws with no time on the clock to send the tenth seeded Mustangs (19-5) to the quarterfinals of the 3A state tournament.
Megyeri recovered a loose ball off a deflected shot by senior Cole McQueeney and took off toward the basket and was fouled trying to shoot as time expired.
“I didn’t say a word (to Megyeri),” Mustangs coach Ken Vecchio said. “I was just looking at the basket. I only cared about the first one. As soon as he released it you could tell it was right on line. It just hit net.”
The Mustangs took an early 18-9 lead and led by 10 at halftime. But foul trouble in the second half let the No. 7 Bulldogs (19-5) get back into it.
McQueeney finished with 16 points. Junior Sam Shultz added 13, including three 3-pointers, and Megyeri had 12.
