Saturday's roundup: Palmer Ridge boys' go unbeaten in Woodland Park tournament
Highlights from Saturday's high school sports action in the Pikes Peak region:
BOYS’ BASKETBALL
Palmer Ridge 67, Mesa Ridge 51
At Woodland Park: Palmer Ridge (4-1) completed a three-game sweep at the Mountain Madness Tournament behind a game-high 22 points from Jaden Wishart and 18 by Kenny Suder.
Mesa Ridge fell to 3-2.
Aurora Central 56, Vista Ridge 35
At Vista Ridge: Jerry Smith scored 11 points and Pierre Copeland added 10, but that couldn’t stop Vista Ridge (2-4) from dropping their third straight game.
Cheyenne Mountain 69, Harrison 39
At Cheyenne Mountain: Cheyenne Mountain (4-0) raced to a 14-point lead at halftime to remain undefeated.
Quincy Harding paced Harrison (2-1) with 13 points, while Thomas Jackson added 11.
Jefferson Academy 56, Manitou Springs 49
At Manitou Springs: Manitou Springs (0-3) couldn’t hold a fourth-quarter lead despite 17 points from Chase Megyeri and 14 from James Finsterwald.
Crowley County 56, Calhan 48
At Calhan: Calhan (2-1) was outscored in three quarters despite 16 points from Jerrod Crook and 12 from Tyler Meyers.
Peyton 56, Rye 46
At Peyton: Ethan Abello led three scorers in double figures with a game-high 18 points as Peyton (2-1) held off the Thunderbolts.
GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
Ralston Valley 58, Doherty 42
At Arvada: Doherty (3-3) played catch-up from the beginning, staring at a 14-point deficit by halftime and unable to recover.
Jordan Nelson led the Spartans with 12 points on four 3-pointers. Aiesha Harris added nine points and five rebounds.
Air Academy 58, G.J. Central 22
At Grand Junction: Kassady Huffman led four scorers in double digits with 17 points, helping Air Academy (3-2) to the road victory.
Madison Rasmussen added 16 points, Justine Jenkinson had 11 and Avery Downey scored 10 for the Kadets, the defending 4A state champions.
Highlands Ranch 80, Sand Creek 50
At Sand Creek: Sand Creek (2-2) couldn’t keep up with last season’s 5A state runner-up, falling behind 19-10 after one quarter. Oliana Squires led Sand Creek with nine points, while Jasmine English and Liah Davis added eight apiece.
Sierra 66, Gateway 29
At Parker: Selina Barnes scored a team-high 21 points, and Cydnie Watkins added 20 as Sierra (2-1) bounced back from Thursday’s loss to Conifer with a resounding win.
Palmer Ridge 54, Coronado 38
At Woodland Park: Madison Thomas scored 20 points to lead Palmer Ridge (4-1) past Coronado (1-5) in the Mountain Madness Tournament.
Rhyley Lane added 13 points and five assists as the Bears bolted out to a 17-8 lead after the first quarter.
St. Mary’s 38, Holy Family 35
At Broomfield: St. Mary’s (3-0) won the Tiger Tip Off, knocking off the host school behind 11 points from Gabi Florek, 10 from Emily Whitelaw and nine from Nicole Niles.
Holy Family (2-2) had averaged 48 points in its two earlier victories in the tournament.
James Irwin 50, Pueblo Centennial 36
At James Irwin: James Irwin (2-3) snapped a two-game losing streak behind Kateri Felix, who led all scorers with 17 points, and Moriah Ceballes and Janie Salas, who added 10 apiece.
The Jaguars had their 10-point halftime lead chopped in half in the third quarter but outscored Pueblo Centennial (1-1) 18-10 in the fourth quarter.
Vanguard 67, Flagler 36
At Flagler: Bailey Haist hit five 3-pointers and scored a game-high 23 points as Vanguard (4-0) routed the host school to win the Flagler Tournament.
Caitlin Bower scored 14 points and Cassandra Sulski added 10 for the Coursers, which had three double-digit scorers for the second straight game.
ECA 48, Custer County 30
At Westcliffe: Evangelical Christian Academy (4-0) blew open a close game by outscoring Custer County 15-2 in the third quarter. Abby Dorman and Tori Mann each scored 14 points, while Sammi Bost added 11 to the Eagles’ balanced scoring attack.
HOCKEY
Fountain Valley 4, Pine Creek 0
At World Arena: Trevor Shott scored twice and added an assist, and Lucas Huerga-Marin stopped all 20 shots as Fountain Valley (2-1) blanked Pine Creek (3-2).
Cheyenne Mountain 3, Cherry Creek 3
At Centennial: Nick Lacayo scored the tying goal with 11:20 left in the third period as Cheyenne Mountain (1-1-1) earned for a tie despite being outshot 37-20. Indians goalie Grant Payne made 34 saves.
Lewis-Palmer 3, Standley Lake 2
At Westminster: Casey McMullin scored and assisted during a three-goal first period, and Lewis-Palmer (2-2) hung on for its second straight win.
Julian Claudio and Cam Brummond also tallied goals for the Rangers.
Aspen 8, Liberty 1
At Aspen: Anthony Kalm scored late in the first period, but Liberty (0-4) allowed six unanswered goals after that in the non-league setback.
WRESTLING
Mile High Duals
At Denver: Liberty’s Brandon Poulus, Josh Burns and Kaiden Springsteen all finished their day with 5-0 records at 126, 152 and 160 pounds, respectively, as the Lancers went 4-1 and won the overall team title.
Grandview Tournament
At Grandview: Junior Tyler Hanenberg won all five of his matches at 126 pounds as Air Academy went 4-1. Kadets senior Caleb Cuneio won four matches, all by pins.
CSCS Invitational
At CSCS: Corey Craddick was the CSCS’ lone undefeated wrestler of the day, pinning all four of his opponents at 138 pounds.
Limon Badger Invitational
At Limon: Ellicott’s Dakota Howe (heavyweight), Raul Morales (160) and Fabian Hermosillo (145) earned individual titles.
