Cougar Duals
At Coronado: The Cougars wrapped up their regular season in style Saturday by downing Pueblo West 62-13 in the final to claim the tournament title.
Nine wrestlers – Devan Cruz (103 pounds), Adrian Cordova (112), Carter McElhany (125), Justin Hays (135), Jared Rieck (152), Nick Burghardt (160), Ethan Olson (171), Riley Ehrlich (215) and Fabian Alanix (285) – finished the day with 3-0 marks for Coronado.
The Cougars now turn their attention to the ultimate goal – a Class 5A state title.
“They’ve really responded well,” said coach Matt Brickell, whose team is adjusting to the loss of injured junior Nathan Burak. “They’re competing. They’re just doing a great job.”
Coronado will wrestle in a regional next weekend and then head to Pepsi Center for the state tournament – an event Brickell believes could be won by any of six teams.
“For state, anything can happen,” he said. “We still think we can win a state title. You have to keep that mentality.”
