Thursday's roundup: Cheyenne Mountain swims past Lewis-Palmer

GIRLS’ SWIMMING

Cheyenne Mountain 117, Lewis-Palmer 69

At Monument Hill Country Club: Cheyenne Mountain’s Morgan Wice and Katie Roach each won a pair of individual events, as the Indians proved area dominance by rolling Lewis-Palmer Thursday afternoon.

The Indians won nine of the dual’s 12 events.

Wice won the 200 freestyle in 2 minutes, 3.13 seconds and the 500 freestyle in 5:36.07. And Roach, this week's Gazette standout performer, won the 200 individual medley in 2:16.05 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:09.94.

Roach and Wice were also a part of two winning relays apiece.

Roach second-legged the 200 medley and Wice anchored the 200 freestyle. And both swimmers went back-to-back to push the Indians’ 400 freestyle relay to a win in 3:48.80.

For Lewis-Palmer, Morgan Day won the diving event with a score of 152.60, as three Rangers divers stood atop the podium.

Fountain Valley 114, St. Mary’s 68

At Harrison: Fountain Valley’s Margot Twomey won 100 freestyle in 59.15 and Sakota Sotome won the 200 freestyle in 2:24.37, as the Danes won eight of the 12 dual events Thursday.

Twomey and Sotome each swam a leg in the 200 medley relay that won in 2:11.64.

St. Mary’s won three of the final four events, led by captain Meghan Harder’s three victories.

Harder won the 100 backstroke in 1:13.06, and anchored the 200 and 400 freestyle relays to wins as the meet closed.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Mesa Ridge 68, Coronado 16

At Mesa Ridge: Mesa Ridge (13-0 overall, 4-0 4A Metro) shut out Coronado (3-10, 1-3) in the first quarter, and furthered the rout from there.

The Grizzlies led 15-0 after 8 minutes, and 37-5 at half. By the end of Thursday’s game, they were still easily undefeated.

Mesa Ridge junior Sami Rudd scored 13 points and grabbed seven boards. But one of the most surprising players in the area this season, freshman Kylee Shook, again stole the show with nine points, seven boards, three steals and seven blocks.

Shook is averaging a double-double a game, with 11.2 points and 12.5 rebounds, while flexing an impressive 7.2 blocks a game to go with it.

Overall, the No. 1 area team in 4A shot over 50 percent from the field while hitting 10-of-15 from the line.

Second-year captain Gabby Purnell added 11 points and four steals for the Grizzlies.

The Cougars scored nine of their season-low 16 points in the third quarter.

Palmer Ridge 46, Hugoton 33

Colby Kansas Tournament

At Colby: Six-foot-1 junior Ali Meyer grabbed her eighth double-double of the season out east in Kansas.

The captain of Palmer Ridge (10-3) scored 17 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in another gritty win for the Bears.

Guard Rhyley Lane added nine points for the area's 4A No. 3 team, going 5-for-7 from the line.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Valor Christian 73, Pine Creek 59

At Valor Christian: Pine Creek’s Austin Meachum scored 15 points and Rhett Lopez added 11 points and seven rebounds, but the area Eagles dug themselves too big of a hole Thursday night.

Pine Creek (5-8) trailed 60-36 headed into the fourth.

The Eagles committed 21 turnovers while racking up only 13 assists.

WRESTLING

Widefield 63, Sierra 12

At Widefield: Widefield’s Angelo Martinez represented one of the Gladiators’ seven pins at Thursday’s dual meet.

Martinez, a sophomore, pinned Sierra’s Emileo Ochoa in 1 minute, 14 seconds in the 126-pound weight class.

Overall, Wideifield won 11 of the dual’s 13 matches.

For the visitors, Chris Dixon was one of the lone bright spots for the Stallions, as he pinned freshman Tristan Sher in 51 seconds.

The Classical Academy 40, Manitou Springs 33

At Manitou Springs: The Classical Academy junior Andrew Register is smaller but all the more to fear. After finishing fifth last year at state in the 145-pound weight class, Register dropped weight coming into this season.

Thursday, the 138-pound wrestler won comfortably with a 19-3 major decision.

For Manitou Springs, junior Ryan Carpenter recorded one of the Mustangs’ three pins in the dual. Carpenter stuck his foe in 3:39.

Buena Vista 42, Colorado Springs Christian 29

At Colorado Springs Christian: CSCS lost every match from 145 pounds to 220 pounds.

The Craddock brothers had dissimilar fates Thursday. Corey, the lighter Craddock brother, won 19-4 in a technical fall decision in the 132 class. Later, his brother Connor lost in a 14-1 major decision in the 145-pound weigh class.
