Athlete of the Week: Devin Mohn, Rampart track and field

Country kid born to run

May 12, 2008 10:31 pm

Rampart's Devin Mohn won the 100-, 200- and 400-meter dashes at this weekend's 5A Region 3 meet and anchored the school record-setting 400 relay that helped the Rams win their first regional title since 1998. He also set a school record in the 200 dash. For his accomplishments, Mohn is The Gazette's high school Athlete of the Week.

How has Rampart been able to be so successful this season?

Basically just hard work at practice. Keeping your mind on what you want to do and never giving up in everything.

How long have you been running?

Since freshman year.

Why track?

I always liked running, because I used to grow up in the country and there's nothing to do but run.

Where did you grow up?

Ellicott.

Do you have any pre-race routines?

My warm-up that I did before that race, I do the same exact thing or I feel like I can't really run how I did last time.

Do you listen to music before?

I really pick one song before my race and I put it on repeat. It just really hypes me up.

Which songs this season have you picked?

I was listening to "We Ready," by Archie the last race.

Are you excited about the Olympics this summer?

Yeah, I'm always excited about the Olympics. It's fun to watch.

Who do you follow?

Well, I was following (sprinter) Justin Gatlin until all that stuff happened, so I really don't follow anyone right now. There's a lot of people coming up that I haven't seen before that are running fast times.

What other sports do you keep up with?

Basketball and football.

Which teams do you like?

I like Dallas in basketball, and I like the Steelers in football.

Why the Steelers?

I've really liked them since the third grade. I don't want to jump on the bandwagon (laughs). I just stick with the same team.

What do you think about the substance abuse in sports?

I don't really respect the athletes that use them. It's cheating, and if you really want to be successful in the league, then I don't think you should be able to use it.

Who is your favorite athlete?

I like Kobe Bryant a lot.

Why Kobe?

Just how he plays the game. How he is successful. How he loves the sport and I don't think he's playing for the money. He's playing for the love of the game.

What other sports do you play?

Football and basketball.

You still have a year left, but where would you like to play in college?

My brother's (Xavier) going to Western State right now, so I was going to try to go there with him, because that would be kind of fun playing with my brother.

Are you and your brother pretty close?

Yeah we are. We hang out and we talk every day. He's my hero.

What is your favorite subject in school?

I like science. I like stuff with animals.

Would you like to pursue something in science as a career?

Yeah, I've been looking toward that. I'd like to be a vet. That's something I'd like to do that's science.

What are you doing to help prepare you for school and sports at the next level?

Really just weightlifting, getting faster, bigger, and getting an education.
