Saturday's roundup: Air Academy wrestling wins Bulldog Invite

Highlights from Saturday's high school sports scene:

WRESTLING

Bulldog Invite

Air Academy 178, Pueblo Centennial 173, Pueblo South 145, Pueblo Central 113, Lewis-Palmer 107

At Pueblo Centennial: The Kadets got first-place finishes from Caleb Cuneio (170 pounds) and Justin Petrash (285) and second-places from Tyler Hanenderg (126), Austin Sethman (145) and Ben Self (195).

Cheyenne Mountain placed four wrestlers, including a first-place finish from Bobby Amond and a second-place from Billy Dabney. Nick Cimino was fourth and Ian Feign was sixth.

Rob Mickel Tournament

At Salida: Six local teams competed in the 19-team field, with CSCS finishing the highest in seventh place with 92.5 points. Peyton was eighth with 91 points, Ellicott 10th with 71, Manitou Springs 11th with 62, St. Mary’s 13th with 44.

There were two local individual champions: Ellicott’s Randy Muñoz (113) and Peyton’s Tyler Brown (182). There was also a pair of second-place finishers in Peyton’s Rich Lancaster (170) and Manitou Springs’ Nate Titcomb (195).

Arvada West Invitational

At Arvada West: Coronado placed fifth at the tournament, scoring 112.5 points, while Fountain-Fort Carson was 12th in the 16-team field with 52 points.

Coronado got individual wins from 106-pounder Trent Watson, who beat Greeley West’s Anthony Garza in a 5-4 decision, and 113-pounder Jess Hankin, who won a 7-4 decision over Greeley West’s Dylan West.

Fountain-Fort Carson 145-pounder Downey Wood scored a third-place win over Greeley West’s Shedrick Boyd.

Pomona won the team title with a score of 148.5 points.

Mel Smith Invitational

At Florence: Cañon City finished sixth in the 21-team field with 88 points, and Palmer Ridge was right behind in seventh with 86.5.

The only local individual titles came from Cañon City’s Garrett Benell (220) and Palmer Ridge’s Tyler Thalhammer (138).

Palmer Ridge’s Jonathan Delacruz (220) took third place, as did TCA’s Andrew Register (138).

Woodland Park placed 12th, while Florence was 13th and TCA was 19th.

Sand Creek 52, Grandview 24

At Overland: The Scorpions dominated behind a strong team performance which included pin-fall victories from Tristan Knockel (106), Corey Henning (138), Eric Metcalf (160), Edgar Urquijo (170) and Tuli Laulu (285).

John Kelley (126) and Jeremy Jaquess (152) each scored wins by technical fall for Sand Creek.

SWIMMING

Chaparral 576, Rampart 411, Lewis-Palmer 365, Castle View 291, Coronado 198.5, Cheyenne Mountain 181, Eaton 109, Pueblo West 77

At Rampart: Coronado’s Allie Jacobs was the lone local swimmer to win a race at the Rampart Invitational, taking the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 2:01.81. Jacobs also took second in the 500 freestyle.

Rampart’s best individual performance came from sophomore Lindsey Horning, who took second in the 100 freestyle and third in the 200 freestyle. The Rams also were second in the 400 freestyle relay.

Lewis-Palmer’s Hannah Beckwith finished second in the diving with a score of 352.30, and Rampart’s Riley Koldenhoven was second to Jacobs in the 200 freestyle.

HOCKEY

Cheyenne Mountain 7, Bishop Machebeuf 3

At Big Bear South: Cheyenne Mountain got two goals and an assist from Garrett Hodson and a goal and two assists from Doug Klopenstine. Tyler Taylor, J.D. Maxwell, Ryan Case and Zach Burch each scored for the Indians (3-6-1).

Cheyenne Mountain dominated despite being outshot 42-26 and Grant Payne saved 34-of-35 shots in net in the 38 minutes he played.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Doherty 67, Coronado 52

At Doherty: Shane Fox scored 25 points and added 13 rebounds and Eli Peterson also had a double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Spartans (9-4).

Doherty has won four straight and opens 5A Metro League play at home against Pine Creek on Tuesday.

Coronado (6-7) is 0-3 on the road.

Discovery Canyon 91, Roosevelt 58

At Discovery Canyon: Brandon Nachbar led Discovery Canyon with 21 points and Nate Todtenhagen added 20 as the Thunder rolled to its fourth straight win.

Geo Fry added 14 points for Discovery Canyon (12-1) and Andy Stauffer had 13.

ECA 67, CSS 47

At ECA: J.D. Kohl posted 31 points, including nine 3-pointers, to help the Eagles run away from the Kodiaks.

ECA (3-7, 1-0 2A Black Forest) led 23-7 after one quarter and didn’t look back, opening 2A Black Forest play with a big win.

CSS (3-7, 0-1) has lost four straight.

St. Mary’s 59, Pueblo Centennial 39

At Pueblo Centennial: The Pirates had three players in double figures as Robert Delfield had 12 points, and Daniel Padrnos and Hunter Holmes each had 11.

St. Mary’s (4-7, 2-4 3A Tri-Peaks East) trailed 25-23 at the half before winning the third quarter 23-12 and finishing the game on a 13-2 run.

Peyton 60, Miami-Yoder 26

At Miami-Yoder: Jared Watkins and Ethan Abello each had 19 points to pace the Pikes Peak 2A No. 1 Panthers in their conference opener. Peyton (7-2, 1-0 2A Black Forest) led 32-7 at halftime and hit eight 3-pointers in the rout. The Panthers have won their seven games by an average of 20 points.

Michael McBride led Miami-Yoder (0-7, 0-2) with 15 points and Kurt Baumann added seven.

Elbert 70, Hanover 13

At Hanover: Elbert got 14 points from both Adam Averett and Bret Meredith and had 11 players in the scoring column.

The Bulldogs (6-4, 1-0 1A Black Forest) opened up a 19-0 lead after one quarter and led 38-6 at the half to win their fourth game in a row.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Colby Kansas Tournament

Palmer Ridge 62, McCook (Neb.) 50

At Colby: The Bears won their third game in as many days to take the tournament title behind 22 points from Madison Thomas. Rhyley Lane added 13 points and Michelle DeCoud had 12.

Ali Meyer had nine points and 23 rebounds inside for the Bears.

Pikes Peak 4A No. 3 Palmer Ridge (11-2) used a 17-6 third quarter to take the game over and returns to Colorado to face Vista Ridge on Tuesday.

Palmer 85, Cheyenne Mountain 19

At Palmer: Palmer put 11 girls on the score sheet and collected 36 steals in the rout. The Terrors got 17 points from Jenn Urbaniak and 15 more from Shanah Leaf.

Pikes Peak 5A No. 1 Palmer had a huge first quarter, outscoring the Indians 31-4. The Terrors (11-2) have won three in a row and will travel to Rampart to begin 5A Metro League play on Tuesday.

Cheyenne Mountain (2-10) has lost four in a row.

ECA 54, CSS 31

At ECA: Mann led ECA with 15 points and Sammi Bost and Sarah Kohl each added 12. A 22-6 first-quarter advantage was all the Eagles (7-3, 1-0 2A Black Forest) needed to break a two-game losing streak.

Kendra Baucom led the Kodiaks (6-4, 0-1) with 16 points.

James Irwin 41, Dolores Huerta 16

At Dolores Huerta: Kateri Felix led James Irwin with 12 points, five rebounds and three blocks, and Amanda Greene added eight points. The Jaguars (3-7, 2-3 3A Tri-Peaks East) led 23-4 at the half en route to ending a three-game conference losing streak.

Vanguard 62, Gilpin County 16

At Gilpin County: Bailey Haist had 21 points for Pikes Peak 2A No. 1 Vanguard and Cassandra Sulski added 11 as the Coursers owned a 40-7 halftime advantage to remain undefeated at 11-0 on the season.
