Saturday's roundup: Coronado, Woodland Park win nail-biters in boys hoops

BOYS BASKETBALL

Woodland Park 47, Harrison 46

At Woodland Park: After losing by 65 to Wasson two days prior, Woodland Park (5-6 overall, 1-1 4A Metro) evened its league record Saturday.

Woodland Park is now 2-1 in games decided by four points or fewer.

Harrison (6-4, 0-2) has dropped two-straight, one-point games.

On Thursday, Al Blanc’s squad lost at Mesa Ridge 59-58.

Saturday, junior Quincy Harding went 8-for-10 from the field, scoring 22 points, while Darrius Graves added 10 points and nine rebounds.

But Harrison, which rallied from seven points down at the half, fell short in the end.

Coronado 62, Widefield 55

At Coronado: Coronado’s Joey Dugan hit one clutch shot after another on one end, and slowed down Widefield’s leading scorer Dominic Howard in the fourth to secure the win.

The Cougars trailed 46-45 headed into the fourth.

“In the fourth we changed to a man-on-man defense,” Coronado coach Myles Johnson said. “Widefield is a great team and we just hung around long enough to get the win.”

Sizzling down the stretch, Dugan scored a total of 14 points with two 3s Saturday. Titus Rice added 13 for the Cougars (5-5 overall, 1-1 4A Metro).

Widefield (7-4, 1-1), which was led by Howard’s 24 points and seven rebounds, dropped its first game of 2013.

Discovery Canyon 73, Elizabeth 69

At Discovery Canyon: After an early week loss to Lewis-Palmer, Discovery Canyon won back-to-back nail-biters on consecutive nights.

Saturday, Brandon Nachbar scored a game-high 27 points and forward Andy Stauffer added 13 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Thunder.

"It was an up-and-down, fast-paced game," Discovery Canyon coach John Paul Geniesse said. "They had some great shooters so I'm really proud of my guys and how we battled."

The Thunder went up by as many as 12, but Elizabeth was always chipping away.

"We'd get it up and then they would close to to a three- or five-point game," Paul Geniesse said.

Aurora Central 60, Rampart 54

At Aurora Central: Rampart couldn’t contain Aurora Central’s Carlton Hurst.

The No. 2 area team in 5A watched Hurst go to the line 20 times, while hitting 18 of them.

The senior scored 33 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to snap the Rams’ three-game win streak.

James Irwin 69, St. Mary's 62

At St. Mary's: Corliss Brekken scored 12 points despite missing all six of his free throws as James Irwin (6-2 overall, 4-0 3A Tri Peaks-East) had to rally in the fourth to beat St. Mary's (2-6, 0-3).

The Jaguars, the area's No. 2 team in 3A, trailed the Pirates 54-48 after three quarters.

Maurice Simpson led James Irwin with 25 points, but he also struggled from the line, going 3-for-9.

As a team, the Jaguars shot 12-for-31 from the free-throw line.

St. Mary's nearly pulled the upset as sophomore guard Alex Greenly hit five 3-pointers on his way to 20 points.

The Pirates went 21-for-28 from the line but still lost.

Lutheran 70, Evangelical Christian 30

At Lutheran: ECA (2-6) lost its sixth-straight game Saturday and second straight contest by at least 40 points.

Friday, the Eagles lost to Colorado Springs Christian 92-29.

HOCKEY

Fountain Valley 11, Liberty 2

At World Arena: Fountain Valley forward Jakub Myska scored five goals and threw out three assists in the rout.

The junior scored the game’s first two and last two goals.

In all, the Danes (6-2 overall, 5-0 Peak) outshot Liberty (0-11, 0-6) 43-to-8.

Fountain Valley, the area’s No. 2 rated team, and the Lancers set season highs in goals scored and goals against, respectively.

Resurrection Christian 7, Cheyenne Mountain 1

At CAHA: Cheyenne Mountain goalies Grant Payne and Jeremy Hamerquist gave up a combined five goals in the third period to ensure the loss.

Payne gave up three goals in the period, totaling five overall in his 39 minutes, before being pulled in favor of Hamerquist.

Hamerquist gave on two goals on 15 shots in 11 minutes.

Resurrection Christian outshot the Indians (2-6-1) 70-13.

Cheyenne Mountain’s Nick Lacayo scored midway through the second period to cut the deficit to 2-1.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Rock Canyon 58, Palmer 47

At Rock Canyon: Not including sophomore Jenn Urbaniak, Palmer shot 29 percent, hitting only 10 shots from the field.

Without Urbaniak it wouldn’t have even been close.

The 5-foot-10 sophomore from Palmer scored 22 points on 10-for-16 shooting, boosting her season average to nearly 16 points per game. She also grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.

In complimentary roles Tuesday, senior Lensy Hardy added eight points and Jasmine Green chipped in six for Palmer.

The Terrors (8-2, No.1 5A area team) face a hit-or-miss Valor team (5-10) Tuesday.

Widefield 73, Coronado 22

At Widefield: Widefield's Angie Smith outscored Coronado by herself Saturday.

The 6-foot-1 senior scored 24 points to give the Gladiators their third straight win.

For Coronado, it has been a miserable week.

After beating Discovery Canyon in overtime a week ago, the Cougars have lost three straight games, including two by 50-plus points.

Taryn Frazier led Coronado with 10 points, despite going 2-for-8 from the line.

Mesa Ridge 55, Sierra 36

At Sierra: Mesa Ridge squashed Sierra at the end of each of the halves, as the Grizzlies (11-0 overall, 2-0 4A Metro) remain undefeated.

Tiffani Jackson had a game-high 18 points, and Kylee Shook added a double-double performance with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Sierra (5-4, 1-1) was led by Selina Barnes' 13 points.

Mesa Ridge outscored the Stallions 13-5 in the second quarter, and 18-8 in the fourth quarter.

St. Mary's 52, James Irwin 16

At James Irwin: St. Mary's is the real deal.

Still undefeated, the Pirates (8-0 overall, 4-0 Tri-Peaks East) are putting up double the points that they give up this season. That's why they are the best 3A team in the area -- maybe the state.

And Saturday was more of the same.

Emily Whitelaw scored 16 points, grabbed eight rebounds and had five blocks in the rout.

James Irwin (3-6, 2-2) scored three points or less in three of the four quarters.

Vanguard 72, Pikes Peak Christian 7

At Vanguard: The area's best 2A team made a statement Saturday -- a very loud one.

Three Coursers players reached double digits, as the Eagles didn't reach 10 as a team.

WRESTLING

Rocky Mountain Invite

Air Academy places second

At Rocky Mountain: Air Academy Tyler Hanenberg and Justin Petrash each took home an invitational championship.

Hanenberg won in the 126-pound weight class and Petrash won in the 285 class.

At Pueblo South: Discovery Canyon has flexed its muscles all over the state, appearing to be a contender for the 4A title come February.

Saturday, Sam Turner (106-pound weight class), Iowa State commit AJ Rees (120), Steve Turner (132), Tyler Oberg (145) and Adrian Beck (170) all won individual tournament titles.

At Poudre: The Thalhammer brothers went undefeated over four duals apiece on Saturday.

In the 113-pound weight class, Ryan, a sophomore, won with two major decisions, a forfeit, a technical fall and a pin in 5 minutes and 10 seconds.

Tyler (138), a senior, had three pins and two major decisions. His pins were in 1:43, 3:37 and 2:37.

Ryan finished sixth at state last season, while older brother Tyler is a two-time qualifier.

At Doherty: Two-time state qualifier Ryan Mahan won five times Friday. Three by pin and two by forfeit.

The senior, hailing in the 182-pound weight class  pinned his opponents in 1 minute and 12 seconds, 2:34 and 3:45.
