Girls' swimming notebook: Cheyenne Mountain off to great start
Strong start keys solid day for Cheyenne Mountain
Cheyenne Mountain, a contender for the 4A state title, started the preliminary rounds in style by setting a 4A state record in the day’s first event, the 200 medley relay. The team of Emily Bauer, Katie Roach, Sydney Buckley and Olivia Gach recorded a time of 1:47.80. The previous mark of 1:47.93 was set by Broomfield last year.
Later, Roach finished second in the 100 breaststroke and third in the 200 individual medley, while Buckley, the defending champ in the 100 butterfly, placed second in her signature event and added a third-place showing in the 100 breaststroke.
Manitou Springs disqualified in 200 medley relay
In football, a false start penalty results in a five-yard penalty. In swimming, it destroys an entire event. Manitou Springs found that out the hard way Friday.
The Mustangs were flagged after Georgia Sinclair, the second swimmer of the relay, was ruled to have dived in before Veronica Morin had touched to complete the first leg.
Morin later qualified for the finals in the 50 free and the consolation finals in the 100 free.
Defending champs strike back
Thompson Valley, the defending 4A state champs, responded to Cheyenne Mountain’s record-breaking relay performance with two of its own. The Eagles set state marks in the 200 free relay in 1:37.22, breaking their own record of 1:38.95 set last year, and in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:32.45. The previous 400 relay mark of 3:33.24 was set by Evergreen last year.

Franklin broke the state record in the 200 IM with a time of 1:58.22. Cherry Creek’s Bonnie Brandon held it previously at 1:59.09, setting it at the state meet last season.
Franklin also won the 500 freestyle prelim by 19 seconds in 4:45.51, and gave her 400 freestyle relay a huge head start, as the Raiders finished first in the prelims at 3:28.81.
