Monday's roundup: Coronado tops Pine Creek in hockey on goal in the final second
Highlights from Monday’s high school sports action in the Pikes Peak region:
HOCKEY
Coronado 3, Pine Creek 2
At Sertich Ice Center: Joey Garcia scored a goal in the game’s final second to give Coronado the victory.
Max Lovato assisted on the game-winner.
Pine Creek (4-14) had led 1-0 on Zachary Barber’s goal, but two scores from Brock Lofgren put Coronado (3-14-1) ahead in the third period.
Hayden Jordan’s goal for Pine Creek at 14:36 in the third period tied the game and sent it on a probable course for overtime before Garcia’s goal that was counted at 16:59.
Palmer 5, Rampart 2
At Sertich Ice Center: Sam Horning scored three goals and had an assist and Sam Kay had two goals and two assists as Palmer (11-8) prevailed.
Evan Dowart and Ian Johnson scored for Rampart (5-11-1).
Cheyenne Mountain 6, Pueblo County 3
At Sertich Ice Center: Playing carefree has worked out great for Cheyenne Mountain (5-12-2), which had two goals and two assists from Brockton Ward on Monday and has won three of four since being eliminated from postseason contention.
The Indians had 36 shots on goal, while Pueblo County (2-17) had 31.
BOYS’ BASKETBALL
Falcon 77, Mesa Ridge 52
At Falcon: Nick Lenhard scored 23 points and Shaun LiVecchio posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds and Falcon cruised.
Dejuan Turner paced Mesa Ridge with 13 points and Cody Groff and Marcus Brown each added nine.
Chances Matlock was the third Falcon player in double digits with 10 points and Brodie Hicks filled the stat sheet with eight points, six blocks, six steals and three assists.
Wasson 57, Pomona 54
At Pomona: Wasson (13-8) built a 33-25 lead and narrowly held on for a road victory over 5A Pomona (8-13).
Mitch Colin scored 20 points for Pomona.
Statistics were not available for Wasson.
Peyton 54, ECA 42
At ECA: Peyton (15-2, 6-0 2A Black Forest) stayed perfect in league play and ran its winning streak to 12 games.
Vincent Bracket scored 15 points for ECA (11-6, 5-3) and Caleb Dillavou added 11 for the Eagles.
Kiowa 58, Fountain Valley 49
At Kiowa: Artiom Vironin scored 11points and Jackson Valenzuela had 10, but Fountain Valley couldn’t hold onto a slim 30-29 halftime lead.
Jon Colarelli added eight points and nine rebounds for the Danes (7-9, 2-6 2A Black Forest).
Kiowa (6-8, 2-5) snapped a three-game skid.
Pikes Peak Christian 70, Hanover 20
At Pikes Peak Christian: Ten player scored for Pikes Peak Christian – paced by Cameron MacKenzie’s 13 points – as the Eagles stormed to a 43-10 halftime advantage and were never threatened by Hanover (3-12, 1-7 1A Black Forest).
Brian Morse added 11 points and Jacob Bruner and Seth Euken each had nine for Pikes Peak Christian (10-8, 6-3).
GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
Falcon 40, Mesa Ridge 26
At Mesa Ridge: Janniqua Thomas scored 19 points and Falcon limited Mesa Ridge to six second-half points in the victory.
Coach Angie Heldstab’s Falcon defense shut out the Grizzlies in the third quarter and held Mesa Ridge to 17 percent from the field. It was off night in general for the Grizzlies, who hit just 5-of-12 free throws.
Sami Rudd paced Mesa Ridge (12-9, 8-4 4A Metro) with 13 points.
Cassidy Budge added nine points for Falcon (12-10, 9-4), which has won three of its past four – with the loss coming to top-ranked Air Academy 52-50.
Palmer 87, Mitchell 41
At Mitchell: Taylor Torres scored 19 points, Katya Saenz had 11 and Shannah Leaf 10 as 5A Palmer (18-3) handled 4A Mitchell in a blowout.
Kadijah Borom scored 16 for the Marauders (8-13) and Rachel Cruz added 11.
The Terrors blocked seven shots and had 23 steals.
ECA 61, Peyton 44
At ECA: Evangelical Christian bounded out of the gates with 23 first-quarter points and managed to keep Peyton at arm’s length throughout.
Abby Dorman and Heidi Mann each had 18 points as the Eagles (15-2, 5-1 2A Black Forest) set themselves up for a shot at the league title if it can avenge a loss to Vanguard when the school’s meet on Friday in ECA’s gym.
Victoria Goodman had 13 points and Shelby Patterson had 10 for Peyton (11-5, 6-2), which can finish no better than tied for second in the league.
If ECA were to beat Vanguard, both teams would finish with one league loss and ECA would hold the tiebreaker based on the head-to-head victory. If Vanguard (16-2, 7-0) wins (as it did 43-36 on Jan. 14 in a game that did not count toward the league standings), the title belongs to the Coursers outright.
Pikes Peak Christian 43, Hanover 28
At Pikes Peak Christian: Alyssa Morrison scored 15 points and had nine steals, Iyanu Lipede had 12 points and 13 rebounds and Pikes Peak Christian (8-10, 5-4 1A Black Forest League) put it away early by limiting Hanover to three points in the second quarter.
Hanover (4-12, 1-6) has lost four in a row.
Fountain Valley 52, Kiowa 30
At Fountain Valley: Delia Brekken and Kim Donaldson each scored 18 points and Fountain Valley (7-9, 2-5 2A Black Forest) outscored Kiowa (3-12, 1-7) 20-7 as it pulled away in the second half.
