Saturday's roundup: Young hits three 3s in fourth to lead Rampart rally

Highlights from Saturday's high school sports scene.

BOYS’ BASKETBAL

Rampart 49, Doherty 39

At Rampart: Tre Young scored six points on one possession and Pikes Peak 5A No. 3 Rampart (10-5, 1-1 5A Metro League) overcame a nine-point, fourth-quarter deficit to beat Doherty (10-5, 1-1) on Saturday.

Young converted a four-point play when he hit a 3 and was fouled. Doherty also was called for a technical foul and Young sunk both of those free throws to put the Rams ahead for good, as they outscored the Spartans 25-6 in the fourth.

“We finally started executing some of our set plays,” Rams coach Patrick Simpson said. “The kids just executed better and made some shots.”

The Rams trailed 28-17 at the half and 33-24 heading to the fourth. But they never got overly dejected.

“The group we have, they’re a hard-nosed bunch of kids,” Simpson said. “This team is relatively young. I don’t know if we know any better.”

Young finished with a team-high 20 points and hit three 3s in the fourth to spark the rally.

“Our crowd got into it,” Simpson said. “Tre Young hit three big 3-point shots and that got us going.”

The Vanguard School 53, Kiowa 49

At Vanguard: Trenton Tulloss forced two turnovers in the final 23 seconds and The Vanguard School (8-4, 2-0 2A Black Forest League) held on to beat Kiowa (5-4, 0-2) for the first time in 2A Black Forest history.

With the Coursers clinging to the lead, Tulloss twice jumped in passing lanes, forcing Kiowa passes to go out of bounds.

“He jumped in the passing lane and they threw two balls into the stands over players’ heads,” Coursers coach Joe Wetters said. “We had all seven players that got in the game play solid defense.”

Vanguard trailed by nine early in the game but rallied to tie the score heading into the fourth. Tim Force grabbed 15 rebounds and Joe Donelson scored 20 points to lead the Coursers.

St. Mary’s 53, La Junta 47

At St. Mary’s: Daniel Padrnos scored 16 points and St. Mary’s (5-7, 3-4 3A Tri-Peaks East) handed La Junta (10-3, 7-1) its first league loss of the season.

The Pirates opened a 30-22 lead at the break, outscoring La Junta 18-11 in the second quarter. Hunter Holmes added 10 points for the Pirates.

Colorado Springs School 37, Miami-Yoder 27

At Miami-Yoder: Hunter Golden scored 17 points to rally CSS (4-7, 1-1 2A Black Forest League) for its first league win of the season.

The Kodiaks trailed 20-15 heading into halftime, but held Miami-Yoder (0-8, 0-3) to seven points in the second half.

Golden’s 17 were a game high, while Jeff Yang and Robbey Morley each added six for the Kodiaks to help snap a four-game losing streak.

ECA 56, Pikes Peak Chr. 44

At Pikes Peak Christian: After trailing by two at the break, ECA (4-8, 2-0 2A Black Forest) outscored Pikes Peak Christian (5-6, 0-3) 31-17 in the second half.

Pikes Peak Christian was led by Jacob Bruner’s 15 points and Mark Waters added 11 points.

No stats were provided by ECA.

Crested Butte 54, Cripple Creek-Victor 34

At Cripple Creek-Victor: Crested Butte (7-2, 1-1 2A Southern Peaks League) used a 22-4 second quarter to pull away for good.

Cripple Creek-Victor (2-8, 0-2) was led by Chris Irelan’s 10 points.

Peyton 56, Simla 33

At Peyton: Ethan Abello hit a pair of 3-pointers and finished with a gam-high 20 points to lead 2A No. 1 Peyton (10-2, 2-0 2A Black Forest) past Simla (7-3, 2-1).

The game featured a battle between unbeaten league foes, but the Panthers jumped out to a 12-5 lead after the first and a 31-12 lead at the break. They outscored Simla every quarter. Jared Watkins added 10 points for Peyton.

Fountain-Fort Carson 58, Pine Creek 50

At Pine Creek: 5A No. 1 Fountain-Fort Carson (8-6, 2-0 5A Metro) jumped to a 40-22 halftime lead, then held on as Pine Creek’s (5-10, 0-2) rally fell short in the second half.

At Ellicott: Pine Creek wrestlers took first place in five of the tournament’s 13 events to capture first overall.

Tyrell Williams (106 pounds), Kacin Nowlin (152), Dakota Colonese (160), Taylor White (182) and Hugh Kluckman (195) all won their respective weight classes.

Randy Munoz (113) and Fabian Hermosillo (145) won their matches in front of their home fans at Ellicott.

Rocky Welton Invitational

At Garden City, Kan.: Tuli Laulu became Sand Creek’s first champion at the Rocky Welton Invitational, winning the heavyweight championship and improving to 22-0.

GIRLS’ DIVING

Lewis-Palmer Diving Invitational

At Lewis-Palmer: Palmer’s Taylor Walsh blew away the competition at Lewis-Palmer’s Diving Invitational. Walsh posted a 404.30, while Fountain Valley’s Maia Presti took second with a 345.40.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Cañon City 64, Sierra 53

At Cañon City: Cañon City (11-4) pulled away in the second quarter with a 21-14 period, then outscored Sierra (9-5) 18-14 in the third to seal the win.

Trinidad 39, James Irwin 26

At James Irwin: Chelsea Velasquez scored a game-high 13 points as Trinidad (11-2, 6-2 Tri-Peaks East) defeated James Irwin (4-10, 3-6).

Olivia Farrington led the Jaguars with seven points.

The Vanguard School 80, Kiowa 24

At Vanguard: Bailey Haist scored a game-high 22 points and Caitlin Bower added 18, as 2A No. 1 Vanguard (12-0, 2-0 2A Black Forest) stayed perfect.

The Coursers led 69-16 after three quarters.

HOCKEY

Coronado 7, Palmer 3

At Ice Hall: Tucker Bloom posted two goals and two assists to lead Coronado (4-10, 3-6 Peak Conference) past Palmer (2-9-1, 0-6-1).

Bishop Machebeuf 8, Rampart 4

At Big Bear North: Rampart blew a 3-1 first-period lead, surrendering seven of the next eight goals to fall to Bishop Machebeuf (6-9, 5-5 Peak Conference).

Kylin Duskus scored twice and Josh Baker had two assists for the Rams (0-14, 0-9).

Tanner Shouse had a hat trick and two assists for Machebeuf and Nick Rems had six assists.
