Thunder records 34 steals in hoops win
Highlights from Thursday’s high school sports action in the Pike’s Peak region:
BOYS’ BASKETBALL
Discovery Canyon 84, Conifer 36
At Discovery Canyon: Brandon Nachbar scored 12 points, Jack Trask had 10, and the Thunder (3-0) recorded 34 steals in a dominating victory over the Lobos (0-3) in first-day action from the Discovery Canyon Shoot-Out.
After a slow start, Discovery Canyon led 19-6 after the first quarter and stretched the advantage to 42-19 at halftime.
Canon City 32, Ridgeview Academy 27
At Discovery Canyon: Wesley James scored a team-high nine points on three 3-pointers as the Tigers (2-1) rallied without leading scorer Logun Javernick, who missed the game due to illness.
Pueblo County 44, Sierra 33
At Discovery Canyon: Dillon Meserve paced the Hornets (3-2) with 20 points and dealt the Stallions their second straight loss to start the season.
Palmer Ridge 66, Dolores Huerta 42
At Woodland Park: Kenny Suder’s 13 points propelled the Bears (2-1) past the Scorpions (1-2) at the Mountain Madness Tournament.
Matt Cameron added 12 points for Palmer Ridge.
Centauri 56, Mesa Ridge 47
At Woodland Park: The Grizzlies (2-1) held the unbeaten Falcons (4-0) 22 points under their season average but couldn’t muster enough offense at Mountain Madness Tournament.
Fountain Valley 47, Colorado Springs School 31
At Fountain Valley: Artiom Vironin scored 11 points and Phil Fay added 10 as the Danes (2-1) raced out an 11-3 lead and never looked back.
Hunter Golden led all scorers with 14 points in a losing effort for the Kodiaks (1-2).
GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
Sand Creek 55, Liberty 37
At Liberty: The Scorpions (2-1) limited the Lancers (3-2) to 25-percent shooting from the field in rebounding from Tuesday’s loss to Pueblo South.
Alex Rivas led Liberty with eight points.
Vista Ridge 25, Woodland Park 24
At Woodland Park: Nikki Kremer hit a tiebreaking basket with 8 seconds left to help the Wolves (2-0) equal their win total from last year.
Michelle Franke appeared to tie the game for the Panthers (0-3) with a free throw with 4 seconds left, but it was negated by a lane violation.
St. Mary’s 48, Manual 29
At Broomfield: Gabi Florek scored a game-high 25 points to lead the Pirates to a season-opening victory in the opening round of the Holy Family Tiger Tip-Off.
Emily Whitelaw added nine points for St. Mary’s.
Palmer Ridge 59, Centauri 46
At Woodland Park: Michelle Decoud led all scorers with 17 points, and Madison Thomas added 16 as the Bears (2-1) dealt Centauri (4-1) its first loss.
Ali Meyer added 12 points for Palmer Ridge.
Lewis-Palmer 46, Florence 25
At Woodland Park: Courtney Fox scored a game-high 12 points to help the Rangers (1-3) snap a three-game losing streak.
Colorado Springs School 38, Fountain Valley 28
At Fountain Valley: Delia Brekken scored 15 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for the Danes (1-2), but it wasn’t enough as the Kodiaks (2-1) recorded the road victory.
GIRLS’ SWIMMING
Liberty 122, Mesa Ridge/Widefield 60
At Liberty: The Lancers claimed victory in six individual events and all three relays.
Kayla Kuecker of Mesa Ridge-Widefield was the day’s only two-event winner, touching first in the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke.
Manitou Springs 113, St. Mary’s 55
At Manitou Springs: Veronica Morin and Samantha White led the way as the Mustangs got past the Pirates.
Morin took home first in the 50 yard freestyle in 25.34 and the 100 free in 56.04.
White finished nearly 20 seconds ahead of teammate Carrie Linhart to win the 200 freestyle in 2:27.19
Meghan Harder (1:13.21) finished first in the 100 butterfly and Kelly Heiniger (1:29.06) also came in first in the 100 breaststroke for St. Mary’s.
WRESTLING
Widefield 59, Mitchell 13
At Mitchell: Joe Trujillo, a state-qualifier last season at 160 pounds, paced the Gladiators with one of four victories by pin. The Marauders claimed three individual victories, including a 10-0 major decision turned in by Caleb McElfresh at 113 pounds.
