Scott and Gordon will meet as rivals for the last time in The Show
Gordon predicts five 3-pointers as he's ready to show offensive versatility
Top area 3A and 2A players will compete in the inaugural Southern Colorado All-Star Showcase on April 13 at St. Mary's (girls at 6 p.m., boys at 7:30).
The games will pit all-stars from the 3A Tri-Peaks league against their counterparts from the 2A Black Forest League.
Wesley Gordon plans to put on a show in the game named just that.
The standout Sierra senior is one of three boys from the Colorado Springs area who will suit up in The Show, a statewide basketball all-star game that will be played Friday night at the Pepsi Center following the 7 p.m. Denver Nuggets vs. Phoenix Suns game.
Three area girls will also be participating, with their game starting at 3:30 p.m.
For Gordon, this will be one last chance to face his longtime nemesis and future Colorado teammate, Lewis-Palmer’s Josh Scott.
The two met in the 4A championship game last month, with Scott’s Rangers taking the title 44-43.
“At the end of the day, he got the ring,” said Gordon, who dismissed the notion that revenge might be on his mind.
With just three practices, the Blue and White teams have just enough time get acquainted but not enough to work on potential matchups. Still, Gordon had no doubt that he’d be the one asked to defend Scott – the state’s leading scorer (28.5 ppg).
Despite a 49-point outburst against Sand Creek, Gordon rarely ventured outside the paint as he stuck to his role as shot blocker, rebounder and inside presence. He said an all-star game setting will provide the chance to handle the ball and show his versatility.
“I want to show them my 3-ball,” Gordon said. “Like five of them.”
Three of Colorado’s signees will be featured in the game, and all three won 4A titles in high school. Gordon won a title with the Stallions as a sophomore, Xavier Talton of Sterling won it in 2011, and Scott won last month before being named the Gatorade Player of the Year in Colorado.
Nate Engesser of CSCS, a Denver signee, will team up with Gordon and Talton on the White team.
On the girls’ side, rivals Taylor Torres of Palmer and Kim Cerjan of Doherty will team up along with Air Academy’s Brittany Hernandez on the White team.
Hernandez led the Kadets to romp through the 4A postseason as the program collected its first title and Torres and Cerjan each led their teams to the 5A quarterfinals.
Cerjan placed third out of eight competitors from around the nation in a 3-point shooting contest in New Orleans last weekend at the NCAA Final Four.
Hernandez and Torres will team up next year at Division II Colorado Christian, while Cerjan will play at Division III St. Olaf in Minnesota.
