Friday's roundup: Manitou baseball sweeps CSCS
Highlights from Friday's high school action in the Pikes Peak region:
Manitou Springs 8, CSCS 6
Manitou Springs 23, CSCS 13
At El Pomar: The Mustangs (6-10) swept the doubleheader behind strong pitching in the first game, and plenty of offense in the second.
Weston Smith pitched a complete game in the first half of the doubleheader, going seven innings and giving up four earned runs on six hits.
In the second game, Cameron Cox's bat powered Manitou. Cox had five RBIs and scored twice. Manitou's Ryan Adamscheck went 8-for-8 combined in the two games, driving in five runs and collecting three doubles.
"These wins put us in fourth place and give us a chance to play a crossover game Saturday that will mean something," Manitou coach Rob Quarry said.
Drew Wilbur was a bright spot for the Lions (4-13), going 5-for-7 with a total of six RBIs on the day.
Cheyenne Mountain 1, Wheat Ridge 0
At Wheat Ridge: A night after pounding Falcon 10-0, the Indians found themselves in a much tighter game. Hayley Patterson scored the lone goal for Cheyenne Mountain, which improved to 13-0 on the season.
Cheyenne Mountain's next test comes against Air Academy on Tuesday in the 4A crossover semifinals.
Chatfield 1, Palmer 0
At Chatfield: Mikaela Hakamaa scored the game's only goal off an assist from Madi O'Dell. The Terrors fall to 2-8-3 on the season.
ECA 4, Florence 0
At ECA: Heidi Mann scored two goals and added an assist to lead ECA, and sister Tori Mann had the game-winner 31 minutes into the contest.
The Eagles (8-5) led only 1-0 at the half, before Heidi Mann tallied both of her goals and Kayla Gaines added a fourth score in the final 40 minutes.
Air Academy 21, Cheyenne Mountain 2
At Air Academy: Air Academy clinched the Southern Conference title with the win and helped to improve its playoff seeding in the upcoming state tournament.
Miranda Beal led the way with six goals and four assists, while Erin Todd added four goals and five assists.
Kayley Holmes won seven draws to help keep the Kadets (12-2) in possession of the ball most of the game, while Kenzie Baer stopped 10 of the 12 shots she faced in net.
"This is usually a good, tight game and it's a rivalry," Air Academy coach Sean Harmon said. "It started with the draw controls from Kayley, and we had great defense and transition to the midfield and then capitalized."
Pine Creek 9, Liberty 6
At Pine Creek: Pine Creek rallied from a 6-3 halftime deficit and outscored the Lancers 6-0 in the second half.
Nikki Herman led the way with four goals and Chrissy Martinez added two scores for the Eagles (4-8).
Ashley Fisher made 13 saves for Pine Creek.
"We talked about who we were at halftime and then we started running our offense instead of trying to force it," Pine Creek coach Roger Wallace said. "We were able to show some composure in the second half and take the lead and never relent."
Monica Knight and Hope Antalek each had two goals for the Lancers (0-13)
Fountain Valley 14, Pueblo West 5
At Fountain Valley: Luke Dilzell had five goals and four assists and Sage Houle and Ian Pelto each added two scores to lead Fountain Valley.
The Danes built a 5-2 lead after the first quarter and cruised to the win with the help of goalie Matt Larimer, who had 13 saves.
