Softball Peak Performers: All-area teams and coach of the year
The logjam in the 5A Metro standings carried right over into this award.
Fountain-Fort Carson, Palmer and Pine Creek were identical in the standings, each behind virtuoso coaching performances.
At Fountain-Fort Carson, first-year coach Jennifer Daigneault overcome a rash of early injuries, helped along a first-year ace who was thrust into the position of being her team’s only pitcher, and played around a bizarrely unbalanced schedule to rally for a spot in the postseason and ultimately a trip to state.
At Palmer, longtime coach Steve DeFelice led the Terrors to the best record in school history (15-4) and within one victory of a trip to regionals.
Either of those two would have been deserving. However, the award goes to David Warhoe of Pine Creek, who took his team from 0-18 in 2011 (and 1-13 in 2010) to 16-5 and the 5A Metro title.
The turnaround was orchestrated through the offseason, as Warhoe found talented instructors to work with his team and change the culture. Players started joining club teams, multiplying their number of offseason games from 10-15 to the upper 80s.
And the turnaround has just begun, as the Eagles lose only one player going into next season.
“We should be even better next year,” Warhoe said. “I’m looking forward to it. We’ve already started with clinics.”
