F-FC's Anthony Davis commits to D-I Northern Colorado

Anthony Davis had been chewing over the decision throughout the fall.

He knew to take his time over such an important choice. So while he considered the options, he chewed up yardage for the Fountain-Fort Carson football team.

Davis, The Gazette’s Football Peak Performer of the Year, verbally committed to the University of Northern Colorado on Sunday.

“I think they’re heading in the right direction,” Davis said Tuesday, when he made the decision public. “Just the way they do things.”

Davis received the offer from the Bears in August, before the Trojans opened play against Pine Creek. The Trojans senior then went out and rushed for 114 yards and two touchdowns against the 4A 2011 state runners-up. He also hauled in an interception.

Playing running back in college was key in his college recruitment.

“That was definitely a big decision,” Davis said. “I think that me playing running back is something I can excel at. ... I’m better suited to play running back.”

He proved it this season. Davis was expected to be part of a three-headed monster of a ground game. But injuries led to him carrying the load and he answered the call, rushing for 1,677 yards on 185 carries for an average of 9.07 yards per rush. He rushed for 19 TDs and caught two more.

Davis was also considering D-II power CSU-Pueblo.

“It was definitely a tough decision,” Davis said. “(CSU) really made me feel like it was home. But UNC did the same thing and I felt that UNC is a better situation.”

On his trip to Greeley the weekend of Jan. 11 Davis met one of the city’s biggest power couples.

“I got to meet the mayor of Greeley,” Davis said, adding that Mayor Tom Norton’s wife is the president of UNC. “He’s a great man; that was cool.”

Davis, who said he might redshirt in the fall, will officially sign on Feb. 6, national signing day.
