Woodland Park 9, Central 7
At Central: Lee Stunkard and Louie Neil had three hits and two runs each to spark the offense. Neil struck out five in 3 1/3 innings to get the win for the Panthers (1-0). Pitcher Matt Champlin homered and tripled in the loss for Central (0-1).
BOYS’ BASKETBALL
Manitou Springs 74, Grand Valley 53
At Hotchkiss: The 10th-seeded Mustangs (18-5) used a 24-13 fourth quarter to open a big lead and eliminate the No. 23 Cardinals (12-11) in the first round of the 3A state tournament. Cole McQueeney scored 22 and Kyle Maring added 16 to lead the Mustangs.
GIRLS' BASKETBALL
CSCS 81, Platte Valley 41
At Colorado Springs Christian School: Senior Brianne VandeGriend led a balanced Lions attack with 16 in their first round 3A state tournament affair. Junior Tiffany Kenney added 13, senior Becca Bultje and Joanna Guhl contributed 11 each as the No. 1 Lions (23-0) dominated the No. 32 Broncos (9-15).
St. Mary’s 53, University 36
At Ranum: The ninth-seeded Pirates (20-2) seized the momentum with 6 minutes to play when senior Christina Whitelaw stole an inbounds pass and scored to open up a 6-point lead. St. Mary’s spread the floor in the fourth quarter as Whitelaw shifted from scorer to distributor, routinely driving and dishing to teammates to extend the lead.
Junior Martina Martin scored all 11 of her points in the final quarter. Senior Jenny Nagl added 14 points and Gonzales nine, all on 3-pointers in the first half, as the Pirates knocked the No. 24 Bulldogs (13-11) out in the first round of the 3A state tournament.
BOYS’ LACROSSE
The Colorado Springs School boys' lacrosse team was short on players so it has combined with Fountain Valley, CSS athletic director Rick Risk confirmed. Fountain Valley's Chris Button will coach the team.
GIRLS’ SOCCER
Mitchell 5, Wasson 0
At Wasson: Junior Kayondra Hood started the season on the right foot, scoring the first three goals of the game for the Marauders (1-0).
Mesa Ridge 10, Sierra 0
At Mesa Ridge: Kayla Riehl put three in the back of the net and Isha Sumah, Stephanie Rose and Krista Aldridge scored two each for the Grizzlies (1-0), who led 8-0 at halftime.
Fountain-Fort Carson 8, Widefield 0
At Widefield: Freshman Brittney McClain scored first, but classmate Jordan Freeman scored the most, notching four goals in her first high school game for the Trojans (1-0).
Palmer 5, Falcon 0
At Palmer: Junior Allie Metzler scored a goal and assisted on two others, all in the second half, for the Terrors in the season opener for both schools.
Coronado 4, Fruita Monument2
At Coronado: Junior Catherine Ruder and sophomore Jessica Stauffer each scored a pair of goals and senior goalkeeper Hannah Smith made six saves to lead the Cougars (1-0).
James Irwin 1, Lake County 0
At James Irwin: Icenia Anderson scored the lone goal for the Jaguars (1-0).
BOYS’ SWIMMING
Doherty 122, Fountain-Fort Carson 62
At Doherty: James Culligan (200-yard and 500 freestyle), Erick Chewakin (50 and 100 free) and Josh Johnson (200 medley and 100 butterfly) each won individual races to lead the Spartans. Seth Lake claimed the only individual win for the Trojans in the 100 backstroke.
