Friday's roundup: F-FC football stays perfect in league play

Highlights from Friday's high school action in the Pikes Peak region:

FOOTBALL

Fountain-Fort Carson 35, Castle View 15

At Fountain-Fort Carson: Anthony Davis scored two rushing touchdowns and added a receiving score to lead the Trojans to a second straight win and help retain sole possession of first place in the 5A Pioneer standings.

Cameron Hacker threw three touchdowns for Fountain-Fort Carson (6-1, 4-0 5A Pioneer), including a 25-yard strike to Zach Adair and a 13-yard score to Josh Haren.

Castle View (3-4, 3-1), which lost its second game in a row, didn’t score until the fourth quarter.

Vista Ridge 41, Air Academy 0

At Air Academy: Vista Ridge running back Brandon Cartagena ran for 173 yards and three touchdowns and quarterback Brayden Stewart threw for 193 yards and had a passing and rushing touchdown.

The Wolves (6-1, 3-1 4A Pikes Peak) got off to a slow start and only led 7-0 at the half before blowing it open with 21 third-quarter points for their second straight win.

Air Academy (1-6, 0-4) was only outgained 414-402 in yardage, but turned the ball over twice. Adam Brown threw for 317 yards and Caleb Cuneio added 83 rushing yards for the Kadets.

Harrison 13, Sierra 12

At Sierra: Demetrius Graves ran for 124 yards and scored the eventual game-winning touchdown on a 36-yard run in the third quarter to give the Panthers (1-6, 1-1 3A Southern) their first win of the season.

After the score was tied at six at the half, Sierra (2-5, 0-2) took a 12-6 lead on a 1-yard Monta Scott touchdown run. However, Graves’ score would come less than a minute later.

“It was pretty sloppy on both sides, and we just made a couple of stops and our defense played really well in the fourth quarter,” Harrison coach Al Melo said. “Sierra is our rival and both teams always play hard and it’s a tough game.”

Manitou Springs 13, Lamar 8

At Lamar: Chad Sienknecht scored with 11 seconds left in the game to lift the Mustangs (6-1, 4-1 2A Tri-Peaks), who remain in second place in the league and have now won two straight since losing to Florence.

Morgan Burnell ran for the other Manitou Springs score.

Lamar falls to 3-4 overall and 2-3 in the league.

Trinidad 48, St. Mary’s 41

At St. Mary’s: Ben Breier had scoring runs of 74, 39, 14 and 1 yard(s) and the Pirates amassed 457 yards of offense, but it wasn’t enough. Breier totaled 152 yards on the ground and quarterback Logan Elliott threw for 91 yards and a score.

Eric Sangueza scored the other touchdown for the Pirates (3-4, 1-4 2A Tri-Peaks), who led 21-20 at the half and saw the score knotted at 34 heading into the fourth quarter.

Trinidad (5-2, 3-2) stays in sole possession of second place in the league.

Valor Christian 49, Doherty 7

At Garry Berry: Doherty’s lone score came on a touchdown pass from Evan Powell to Zach Anderson in the third quarter. The Spartans fall to 0-7.

Valor Christian (5-2) won its fifth game in row.

Woodland Park 46, Mitchell 38

At Woodland Park: Matt Cox ran for 147 yards and two touchdowns and added 207 passing yards and four more scores for Woodland Park (3-4, 1-1 3A Southern).

Aaron Wright had a monstrous game for Mitchell. Wright had touchdown runs of 80, 73, 66 and 44 yards for the Marauders (2-5, 0-2).

Lewis-Palmer 40, Coronado 20

At Lewis-Palmer: Lewis-Palmer got four touchdown runs and two scoring passes from quarterback Nate Connor. The Rangers (3-4, 1-1 3A South Central) scored 20 points in the second quarter and then closed with 14 more in the fourth to preserve the win.

Evan Strauss scored on a 2-yard run for Coronado (3-4, 1-1) and Joah Smith found Luke Brown for a 15-yard scoring pass for the Cougars’ other touchdown.

Discovery Canyon 42, Wasson 7

At Discovery Canyon: Discovery Canyon (6-1, 2-0 3A South Central) scored 28 second-quarter points to rout Wasson and remain unbeaten in the 3A South Central Conference.

Wasson’s (1-6, 1-1) lone score came from a Theron Brandt 8-yard run. 

Florence 27, La Junta 13

At Florence: The Huskies (6-1, 5-0 2A Tri-Peaks) trailed 13-7 at one point before rallying to stay unbeaten in the 2A Tri-Peaks.

La Junta falls to 5-2 and 3-2 in the league.

Canon City 22, Pueblo South 21

At Canon City: Canon City rebounded from a blowout loss with a comeback victory to improve to 5-2 and 2-2 in the 4A Foothills.

The score was tied at 15 at the half, but Pueblo South took the lead after a touchdown and missed extra point in the third quarter, leaving the door open for the Tigers.

Widefield 36, Pueblo Centennial 35

At Widefield: After starting the season with five straight losses, Widefield (2-5, 1-2 4A Foothills) has pulled off two one-point victories in consecutive weeks.

BOYS’ SOCCER

4A CSML Tournament

Coronado 3, Sierra 0

At Garry Berry: Kevin Walsh and Brandon Hellem each had a goal and an assist to lead Coronado. The No. 4-seeded Cougars will now play No. 1 Mitchell on Tuesday, Oct. 16 in the second round of the CSML Tournament. Stanton Rubio added the third goal, while AJ Johnson had an assist for the Cougars (7-6).

Coronado is on a four-game winning streak, while No. 5 Sierra (4-8-1) heads to the consolation bracket to face No. 8 Wasson.
